Fig Newtows at 18 months of age, yes/no?

For a couple of weeks now my 18 month old has been eating fig newtons. He's been taking his time eating them and enjoying them.

However yesterday we were at a party where he was very excited running around and playing. He had a fig newton (the smaller 1 1/2" inch size ones) and took a little bite then out of the corner of my eye I saw him shove the rest in his mouth. I didn't think anything but then 5 seconds later I saw my DH helping him hack it out causing him to throw up quite a bit. I also had to scoop some out that was stuck on the roof of his mouth.

I'm afraid to give him another cookie now even though he was eating them great for the past two weeks. I was surprised he shoved all of it in his mouth but I think it was because he was playing and wanted to get rid of the cookie to use both his hands to play and it was a bit too much.

Do you think I should take away these cookies for now or just take what happend as a freak thing? Did you give your children fig newtons at this age? Did you have a similar problem with some other kind of food?

We give DS fig newtons from time to time. They can be messy so he is always seated in his highchair when he gets them. Now that I think of it I always break them in half rather than give him the whole cookie...he has a tendency to stuff. He's 21 months...

I think it was where he was given the cookie, not the cookie itself. You said he was excited to be running around, so he probably wanted to finish the cookie and run around, KWIM?
