Fighting with my dog to cut his nails! Long sorry!
hi everyone! I desperatly need help with my dogs nails. hes 2 1/2 yr old puggle. we have been struggling to get his nails trimmed for quite some time now and i thought the "pedicure nail filer" was our answers. Just tried it and its a NO NO. First off let me explain why he hates his paws touched. We got him as a pup and i had no problems what so ever to trim his nails with the nail clipper until he was about a year and a half. Then I took him to get groomed to a place close to me. (recommended by a friend)Well it was horrible.. Poor thing came home and there was blood all over the kitchen floor. i tried looking at his paws and he yelped. They butchered him. His nails stopped bleeding after a little and since then NO ONE can touch his paws. I took him to my vet to get them cut and he let out a scream like i never heard b4. Its been a battle with him. I try taking him for walks and during the summer its ok bc the concrete files them down. Now that its cold he only goes out to do his buisness and inside within 30 seconds. he hates the cold. but his nails are getting soo long! I dont know what to do!
I also cannot brush him without him yelping since i took him to that groomer. So my poor baby has long nails and is never brushed. I have every gadget created - 3 different brushes, nail clippers, nail files, pedicure, i even got him the dremmel. Nothing is working! What else could i do?

I think you need to retrain him. I'd start real slowly. Touch his nails with your hand, then give him a treat. Do that for a few days. Maybe you can eventually move on to just a regular nail file, use it gently stop, reward then try more the next day. I had a pug and it took 3 people at the vets office to cut her nails, 2 people to restrain her, 1 to cut. Maybe it's a pug thing.

Definitely agree. He's obviously had a really bad experience and is associating grooming with pain. You have to retrain his mind to see it as a good thing. Best way to do that is with positive reinforcement and TREATS!
This might help, although I'd probably stay away from anything that makes noise at this point, if I were you:
How to dremel a dog's nails.
We've been doing this with slow progress. I would start by just laying my hand on top of his paw and saying "paw" then treating. Then stroking his paw, "paw", treat. Then picking his paw up and holding it in my hand, "paw", treat. You get the idea.
I'm feeling the pressure though because our dog's nails are too long now, and touch the ground. Eventually when they get too long, they force the pads of the feet up and spread out the pads which is painful for them. So I'd definitely start working on it as soon as possible. Every day, if you can.
Good luck with it.

We have the same problem with our dog. She hates to have her nails trimmed! She will let you play, squeeze and touch her paws no problem. But as soon as she sees any kind of trimmer/clipper in your hand there is no treat in the world that will get her to sit still.
I even took her to the vet to see if he could give her something to calm her down but he was against it. He basically told us to make sure that we exercise and her walk her enough so that they will stay filed down. So that's what we do.
Good luck!
