finger paint
At what age did you brave finger paint? And do you have any cute activities to do with it?

DD is 14 months and she's been finger painting for about 1 month. what kind of paint do you use, how do you set it up. where does she sit while doing this. and most importantly, how messy is it

Re: finger paint
We did it for the first time recently, right before his 2nd bday. We did it outside, I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to do it inside. I also limit PlayDoh because it makes a mess and gets into the carpet.

I use crayola finger paint or I use food coloring in vanilla pudding...
I start them in their high chair with a smock, or in the summer in just a diaper..
Now they both do it on their "craft" table (my old table and chair set). I bought them crayola kid smocks.
It's not that messy, the older they are the less messy it gets..at least for my girls..
The hardest part is letting go as a parent and letting them have fun and not worry about the mess!
Crayola cleans up very easily and washes out with no problems!
Both girls use the crayola kid paint too, really easy to clean up.

Re: finger paint
The day of my sons actual frst birthday we put him in his high chair and let him go to town he had soooooo much fun. I didn't care about the mess. His face was unforgettable. He was screaming watching it go on the paper. Also you may want to tape the paper to the suface she is working on it makes it easier for them with out the paper moving everywhere. I used crayola as well. Put a drop cloth under just in case of spills. I got a vinyl one at Babiesrus but my aunt just uses an old sheet. Good Luck!!!

Crayola has washable finger paints. You can set her up in her high-chair or throw a vinyl table cloth down on the floor. She will love it!

Re: finger paint
I think we started at 1. So much preparation...
I saran wrap the table first, towels on the floor, big t-shirts go on the boys...high chair up to table...
20 minutes of getting ready 10 minutes of painting, then they get bored... then the cleanup.
not worth it...only on rainy days.

Re: finger paint
I started Ella around 2. I have Melissa and Doug washable paints, which are very gelatinous, so they don't get everywhere. (she had bathtime finger paints much earlier)
I sit her down at the kitchen table with a big piece of paper taped down (no other prep). She generally gets it on her clothes (it washes out, but I want to get a smock), and sometimes requires a bath. The only part I hate is that it gets under her nails and turns them green/blue for a few days.
She's all about putting all the colors together and smearing.

Re: finger paint
I started Sabrina with the magic ones that Crayola makes (they only work on special paper) around 16 months. Then we got real stuff around 18 months.
We don't do it at home, we leave it at Grandma and Grandpa's as they have a real play area for her.
Not too messy so far.

Both my girls could sit up before 5 months old.
Here was Brooke's first time finger painting:

She rubbed her eyes (and Kaitee painted her):
