Fireplace...how the heck do we use this thing
I have to get past it and admit that I have no idea how to use this thing. Can anyone guide me? I want to get the duraflame logs and set up a nice cozy fire - especially for the holidays but I have no idea what to do...here's what I know....
1. Open the door.

Re: Fireplace...how the heck do we use this thing
I'm not an expert on this... BUT we did rent a cabin upstate early last spring and used the fireplace there....
make sure the Flue(sp?) is open - I know that's an important step!
We had the logs on a tray thing (I have no idea how else to explain it), more like a rack that goes inside the fireplace. Underneath, we had crumpled newspapers and kindling to help start the fire and get the logs going.
That all seemed to work

Just open the Flue - put the logs on a log stand (if you dont have one they sell them anywhere that sells fireplace supplies - target has them i think).
If you use a duraflame i think you just light the bag on fire. they are very easy to use but you will want to add more regular logs once you get the fire going.

make sure flu is open.
whether using a duraflame or real wood.....roll up some paper and light it and stick it up into the chimney to warm it to reduce the smoke coming back into the house. Then you can throw it under the duraflame/logs and then light up your duraflame.
Also, do you know the last time the chimney was cleaned? very important.....if you don't get it cleaned annually, the build up inside can ignite and you have a fire in your chimney.
if you want to use real wood, I can advise on that as well.

Good Tip!!!
1. Open doors 2. Open Flue 3. Arrange tight balls of crumpled up newspaper/cardboard in center of "rack". 4. Arrange kindeling (small pieces of wood, sticks, twigs, bark etc. they sell this in stores too) into Tee Pee shape over newspaper. 5. Arrange larger pieces of wood 2-3 over that. Light paper from bottom all over and keep tending to it. You may need to add more paper & kindeling to get it going.
Sometimes closing the doors in a certain way limiting the air can spark it up.
OR
1. Open doors 2. Open Flue 3. Place duraflame on rack 4. Light edges

Its like a lever above the fireplace "box" stick your hand up the chimney you'll find it

yeah, there should be a lever in the front you slide left or right, or on either side so you can move it front to back. Sometimes they are up in the chimney in the middle. Just grab a flash light and look.

When we were renting a house with a fireplace - we didn't open the flu - and within minutes the entire house was filled with smoke! So you'll pretty much know right away if it's open or not.

Thanks again...okay...I feel ready to give this a shot. I printed out the two links to study on the train. But I am making DH search for the flue. I'll pretend to know what I am talking about now that you all pointed me in the right direction.
