First Car
I'm in the market for my first car and since I have a small child and a big dog, I was thinking of getting a small SUV, something along the lines of BMW X5.
Do you think an SUV is too much of a car for a first car? I know my insurance premium is probably going to be higher since I am a new driver but I really want a safe and comfortable car, in case I need to go out driving in a weather like this.
Thanks!

Re: First Car
You usually get used to it pretty fast... I would give it a test drive and see how you feel. There is always the smaller version like the X3 if you feel it is a little too big and want to start with that first.

Re: First Car
the X5 is nice, but it's big.
it's a matter of choice. I felt more comfortable driving my uncles Xterra than I did driving a Corolla...but I'd much prefer to drive the Subaru over the Z3
no matter what, I wouldn't get a NEW car. as old as we are we need to start used for a first time car.
if you want something good in the snow, check out BMW's XI (all wheel drive) also certain Audi's have it as well. and there is always Subarus. While we were looking, I liked the Tribeca. I LOVED the WRX.
since we purchased as stick, it looks like come spring time I will be driving the bimmer anyway...but at least it's 6 years old now and not brand new
Good luck.

Re: First Car
Oh I'm not getting a brand new car...absolutely not. And I am not set on BMW either...I like Honda CRV and the Nissan Murano as well...I was just wondering if the SUV would be too much for me to handle as a first car. Oh and I could never and would never drive a stick...too hard!

Re: First Car
I think a small SUV is great for a first car.
We just got a Subaru Forester and the insurance premiums are lower on the Forester than they were on my Honda Civic because of the safety features the Forester had.

Re: First Car
I have a honda pilot and I never had an suv before because I was afraid it would be too much but it's sooo not. It drives just like a car and the ride is so smooth and you don't feel like this little person in this huge car you can't maneuver. Big cars intimidate me so if I can drive this car anyone can.

Same with us, we just bought a new Mazda CX-7 (a mid-size SUV) and the insurance was cheaper than on our Corolla because the Mazda was rated safer. It's not too big and I was afraid it would be since I've been driving a Corolla for so long, but the transition was easy. Good Luck!

Re: First Car
I went from a Dodge Neon to a Nissan Pathfinder. You will get used to the SUV fast. Test drive a bunch of different cars and SUVs you like and see what makes you feel most comfortable.

Re: First Car
my first car was an SUV
so was my sisters and brother too
we were only allowed to drive SUVs - and me and my sister still do- (my brother lives in FL - so he doesn't need one)
I think it's easier to drive an SUV over a car for me anyway- and I have had a few cars- I need to be high up
