Re: first day of school activities
I sometimes do a toilet paper game... i guess you can do it with any age, but i do it with my high school kids... i take out a roll of toilet paper and tell them that they are going to have a job to do and pass around the roll and tell them to take as much as they think they need to get the job done... some kids will take one square, others a TON, once they all take their toilet paper, i then tell them what their job is... for each square of TP they took, they have to tell the class something interesting about themselves... so those wise guys that end up taking half the roll get slammed! sometimes i make the person who has the most switch with the person who has the least...
this year i think i am going to do something new... i bought a book of questions and each day i am going to start by asking a question, then go into the lesson from there... i attended a workshop this summer that did this and it really made us want to get to class on time because we didnt want to miss the question...

Re: first day of school activities
I love the idea of the tp game! I might try that! ( I am also teaching a class for teachers and this would be a cute ice breaker!)
I also have done classroom BINGO where the kids fill out a card and then need to go and get signatures of kids who match their squares (ie.favorite ice cream flavor etc. )
I have also done the yarn game where you are all in a circle. You toss the yarn to someone and they tell two things about themselves. They toss the yarn again and by the end you are all "connected".
