First-hand experiences with Sachem schools?

We'd been avoiding Sachem because of the large size of the district, but because of the large size, there are many more houses for sale than in the other towns we have narrowed our search to include.

Does anyone have any first-hand experience with Sachem? I am concerned about large classes, and the ability to play on sports teams, etc. due to the large size of the district.

Re: First-hand experiences with Sachem schools?

I went to Sachem and had a good experience. Granted, I graduated 10 years ago so I can't speak for the current state of things, but they have changed a lot about the district in the last couple of years. There are 12 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, and 2 high schools. The district used to only have two junior highs (6 elementary each), that then combined to one HS for 9/10th grade and one for 11/12th grade. Now two of the middle schools go to one high school (10th-12th) and two go to the other school, which greatly reduces the graduating class size. Now the schools, although in the same "district" compete against each other in sports and stuff. But it opens up more opportunities for more students.

Large districts definitely have their pluses/minuses - lots of opportunity for extracurriculars, varying levels of classes (special ed to honors and AP), etc. but I do know it can also be tough for some students (ie. my brother was a "regular" student and my parents felt he got lost in the shuffle a little bit whereas my sister and I were in all honors/AP courses and had more attention). This however was when the district was much larger.

Not sure if this helps at all, but hope it gives you a little insight. Good luck! Chat Icon

Thanks so much to both of you. I was worried about students getting lost due to the large size, but I can also see the pluses to being in a district of that size...

Re: First-hand experiences with Sachem schools?

My DH and my niece both went to Sachem. DH loved it and played a lot of sports while he was there. He is very social so the size didn't bother him. He was an "average" student in most subjects.

My niece had slight learning disabilities and found Sachem to be VERY accommodating to her needs. She is now doing very well in her first year of college Chat Icon

HTH! Good luck!

I went to Sachem and really loved it. I can see where some people would get "lost" but also see lots of opportunities. There are so many programs and so many different "groups" that its hard to be alone. There really is something for everyone.

I've heard that about special ed., and a colleague of mine has her daughter in Sachem for special ed. though they live in Smithtown and is extremely pleased with the special ed program, but to be honest I hope to not have to use that aspect of the school district.
