first real scary mommy moment
I had santino on the changing table and I was letting him play with and sip a bottle full of water. It was a new bottle (we usually use born free but the was a platex vetaire fast flow nipple). He started to choke and grasp for air, I immediately lifted him up and cud tell he was not catching his breath like he usually does when he chokes on saliva. He then proceeded to throw up his breakfast and was still struggling. I picked him up and turned him upside down(I remember reading to do this?) He was still "choking" and when he finally started crying I held him and rubbed his back. He kept trying to cry but couldn't bc he still couldn't clear his through completely. I walked around with him and a few minutes later he through up again (frm nose too). Then he finally gained composure and seemed fine.
As much as I panicked I kind of knew in the back of my head he couldn't really choke to death on water....but it was so scary:( he was really struggling, glassy eyes red face cudnt cry:(
So my questions are.. Cud he hav choked to death? Did I react correctly? Why did this cause him to throw up so much?
Thank the LOrd above he is totallu fine now and laughing as usual.

Sounds like you did great!!! Good job!! At his age I don't think he could choke to death on water, younger they might because they don't always remember to breathe (that's what happened to my DS at 5 weeks - called 911 and everything).
I'm glad he's back to his old self.

Re: first real scary mommy moment
That can be scary
What I've always been *told* to do by my mom is lift their arms into the air as it opens up the windpipes.
That's why you always hear people saying "Hands in the air" when something goes down the wrong pipe.
You did a good job mama.

Re: first real scary mommy moment
I'm sorry this happened to you and DC
I don't know what "should" have been done but I know you reacted quickly to your baby and he's fine now (which is the most important thing).
Situations like this remind me I need to sign up for an infant CPR class.

OMG very scary! I honestly don't know what I would have done in that situation..I just hope if I am ever in this sort of situation that I act the same way you did and not completely freak out!

Re: first real scary mommy moment
I think you did the right thing. From my baby and child cpr class I was told NEVER raise DCs arms and that is an old method not recommended anymore as it can push what ever is choking the child further down - thus doing exactly opposite of what you want to do. Inverting DC over your knee and rubbing their back was exactly the right move.
Here is a link from babycenter on the proper way to administer CPR to an infant.INFANT CPR LINK
ets: I took the class back in 07, I really should take a refresher course.
