First Trimester Screening Question
Hi Girls, I know I don't post a whole lot, but I was wondering if you could help me out. Sorry this is so long.
DH and I went for the first trimester screening this morning. The baby was measuring a little bigger on the ultrasound than they thought, so they weren't able to submit the test to the lab. My official due date is January 14 and they said this morning that I was measuring for January 9. The doctor said that the fold of the neck appeared a little thick, so I have to go back for bloodwork and an appointment with a genetic counselor. I am hoping to avoid an amnio if possible, however, if there is a problem, I would like to be as prepared as possible. The docs are being extra cautious because of my age (38) and because I had an issue a few weeks ago with the blood vessels in my legs. I do know that even if they had been able to do the whole test, it does have a high rate of false positives.
Has anyone had something similar happen? DH and I are hopeful but concerned.
Thank you in advance!

Re: First Trimester Screening Question
There is definately a high rate of false positives and really the only way to be sure is to have the amnio. My friend was also told her baby was measuring really big(she was- she was born HUGE!), and the fold on the neck was very thick. Her blood work came back one in four for downs. She and her husband agreed they were having the baby no matter what and they had a healthy baby girl- no disabilities what so ever.
Why do you not want to have the animo? The risks? Is it too late to have the CVS? I had one the last pregnancy and it was fine.

Re: First Trimester Screening Question
Thanks!
We're hoping to avoid the more invasive types of testing, but will make the final decision when we get the bloodwork results back. It is more about peace of mind and being properly prepared if necessary.
I know there's a lot of pros and cons either way. In the end, DH and I will talk with the doctor and decide what's best for us. The wait is killing us though!
