First Trimester Screening Results
Hi-
I had the first trimester screening done and my results came back very high risk of having a child with DS. I was given the option of getting the CVS or the Amnio and I really don't know which way to go. Does anyone have experience with either one of these tests?
Thanks. I am so upset.

Re: First Trimester Screening Results
First, I am very sorry you got negative results. Remember that there are some false positives with this screen, so there is a chance nothing is wrong at all.
I wound up doing neither test, but I researched both, and the CVS is slightly riskier for the fetus then the amnio. Also, the CVS test will not give you information about certain neural tube defects such as spina bifida, but the amnio will.
The plus with the CVS is that it is done earlier, and if you decide you do not want to continue with the pregnancy, it's better to decide early. It's a horrible thing to say, I know, but it's a consideration.
This is a hard decision to make, and I wish you all the best.

Re: First Trimester Screening Results
I was also given not so good results with the ultrascreen. For a variety of reasons DH & I went forward with an amnio (vs. doing nothing, as we weren't given an option to do CVS). I am happy to say that those results showed that everything was A-OK.
The amnio itself was not painful. I did stay home in bed for two days on the advice of the girls here (MD says 1 day), and then only got out of bed to use the bathroom for day 3 (Saturday), and used the computer a bit on Sunday. All the extra bedrest was simply b/c I was paranoid and not for any real reason (not to mention that it was nice having DH come home for lunch )

Re: First Trimester Screening Results
I'm very sorry to hear about your results but remember there are false positives associated with these tests. I would personally go for an amnio..more informative and less risky than a CVS. for you and your baby.
