FL people or anyone that can explain this to me?
the screened in pool?
I am not getting it
every house I like (I want a pool) has a screened in pool
I am sure I can take it down
but what is the advantage to having this?
are my neighbors going to think I am a crazy yankee when I take it down the first day I live there

Re: FL people or anyone that can explain this to me?
well I'm not really a Florida person but here's what happened to my BIL. Hurricaine Wilma tore his "lanai/screen room" thing off the back of his brand new house in Wellington. His homeowners insurance deductible was a whopping $30,000 He decided NOT to replace the screen since it was more than his deductible. His kids will not go in the pool, they go in their friends screen covered pools instead. And yes his neighbors do think he's a crazy yankee.

ahh- I get it now
I am only thinking about the day time - when I want to be on a float in my pool getting sun
I still don't want the screen

I have seen them without a solid top...but with a screen, so you can still lay out and get a tan!

That's what I heard! Bugs are the biggest thing.
I have seen those screens too and at first I felt like it was a giant bird cage from the zoo.

that's an idea
I found a few more homes with out the screen- the ones with the screens also have lakes in the back- which makes sense
my Dad is on the intracoastal - and their pool is not screened in- I am going to ask him if they ever have unwanted "guests"

my IL's have a house on the intercoastal near Lauderdale and there are no screened in pools... Never heard of any issues.

GATORS!!!!!
I've seen way too many episodes of COPS or animal planet when people need to be called in to get a humongous alligator out of their pool.

The purpose of the screened in porch is to keep alligators and snakes out of your pool. I guess technically you don't have to have one, but I think everyone should get one in fla.

I lived in Fl for a few years after HS and wondered the same thing until a snake went into a friends pool
Bugs, like flying roaches and many other critters also if you live near the many lakes there are curious gators.

I agree with others, the bugs. My parents didn't have one when they first moved into their new house. Now they have one and they are able to sit outside, where they weren't able to before.

Re: FL people or anyone that can explain this to me?
I want our next house to have a screened in pool... i love it! You don't have to worry about bugs flying around (which there can be a lot of in the summer) or any animals getting in the pool. Plus, we could let our cat out there when we're outside and not worry about her running away.
Oh and you do get sun through the screen, my friend has one and we lay out all the time.

my cousin in Daytona has his pool screened in to prevent the alligators from going in there!!! mosquitos I think can still get through screens, I think its more for the wild life.

really?
I just want to be able to get sun- but I don't way to rip it down and then be mad that I did
I am stressing more about the screen on the pool- then the whole picking up and moving to FL process - I make no sense!

I grew up in So. Florida and our pool is not screened in. We never had a problem with any wildlife getting in. I have never even heard of that happening. I guess it depends on what part of Florida you are in

Re: FL people or anyone that can explain this to me?
My SIL is in Boynton. They had a screened in pool. It had a screen on the top so you can get color. It helped with bugs but also think about how much easier it is to keep the pool clean
One of the hurricanes ripped it off though. They never had it replaced my SIL likes it without it and It looks much bigger without it!

Re: FL people or anyone that can explain this to me?
BUGS
Love bug season is the worst. They are out all the time. Love bug season is twice a year but those little things get into everything. Even laying out during the day you will be surrounded by love bugs. They are harmless just really annoying.
Yesterday sitting on my lanai I saw a giant spider on my screen. This thing I am not kidding was about 3 inches big and just scary looking. I had DH come out and kill it with bug spray.
We also have bob cats, racoons, turtles, rabbits and snakes.
Keep the screen. Even when you're not in the pool and at night who knows what will crawl in and what you'll find floating in the pool the next morning.

Re: FL people or anyone that can explain this to me?
I live in Port St. Lucie. My pool is not screened in. When we had the pool built in 2006 - the screen enclosure was $9,000 - my husband thought it was way too much money. Alot of people here have a "bug phobia". Honestly my husband and I sit out by the pool at night and we do not get attacked by bugs. I also do not have any large trees (besides Palm trees) in my yard that would drop leaves in the pool. There are also a few other things we found out about the screen rooms that we did not like - FM me if you want more info. I also have my entire back yard fenced in by a six foot wood fence - In St Lucie County if you do not have the pool screened in, your yard need to be completly fenced in - it is county code. We also had to have a baby gate around to pool in order to pass city inspection.

OK, dumbo here... how exactly does a screen stop an alligator from coming in?
