flat head at 6 months
We had our 6 month check up last night. All is well except for her flat head, It has improved, but not enough to my doctor's liking. So she wants us to see someone about possibly getting a helmet. Is she too old to try the noggin nest? Any other suggestions on how I can help this? I just feel awful, she is hardly on her back. Just for sleeping.

Bumping because I know other moms dealt with the same issue.

I would definitely look into the helmet. I realized DS was getting a flat head at around 2 months from sleeping on his back. We did the noggin nest and rotating him in his crib. By about 6 months it was greatly improved. At 18 months there is the tiniest flat indentation that most people never ever notice or feel. However it bothers me!!
I think that at 6 months the plates are definitely fusing, making it harder to correct with just rotating and a noggin nest. The helmet might be annoying for a few months but worth it if the condition is severe enough. My doc said that by 1 year is the cutoff time to do anything about it, after that its much much harder to correct! Good luck!

Re: flat head at 6 months
For DH's cousin at that age there was nothing more they could do. They had to get the helmet. He wore it for 6 months. In the beg it was 23 hrs and then as time went on, he had to wear it less and less.
His head is perfect now.

Re: flat head at 6 months
We had serious problems with plagiocephaly (flat head). It was torture for us, because our son had it pretty bad (resulted from torticollis, weak neck muscle)
There are two lines of thinking with the helmet, depending on the MD you see.
We've consulted both Dr. Egnor in Stony Brook and Dr. Mittler in Nassau County.
Egnor is not pro-helmet unless the head is completely distorted (where the features are distorted as well);
Mittler is much more pro-helmet.
We tried the helmet for about a month, but we decided to forget it. Our son was not happy with it, he was sweating profusely (supposedly, the sweating should correct itself after a week or so), and we just hated it.
Now my son is almost two and you can't really tell he ever had a problem.
Hang in there, if you need to vent please feel free to FM me, I've gone through every emotion regarding this situation.
