flu shot

Is anyone planning to get one this season? My company is offering it for free and I am wondering if it would be a good idea for me to get one?
It would be during my 2WW though so I dont know...what do you think?

I'll prob call the dr to ask as well.

Re: flu shot

i am never getting the flu shot again...

reason being is.... i never had one before... until a couple years ago.. i was working at the Pediatric office.. and i figured..why not!! so i wont get sick...
so i got the flu shot.... shortly after that ... i got the flu Chat Icon
the doctor that i was working for said i should'nt have gotten it.... basically saying... dont mess with your body if its not used to it..

just a little experience to share... obviously i am not a doctor . Chat Icon

Re: flu shot

yikes!
I know it's recommended for pregnant women to get it but I don't know about us TTC-ers...
I don't want the flu though...with or without the shot!

Re: flu shot

If Drs. say it's okay for pregnant women to get a flu shot, it's fine if you're TTC as well.

While my Dr. suggested it since I am pregnant now, I will not be getting one. I've never had one, and never had the flu.

Same here - they are free at my job - but the theory of - i've never had one, i don't want to mess with my body right now is what i'm going with.

Re: flu shot

I just got mine last week. I figure I prefer to get in while TTC, then having to worry about whether or not to get it while I am pregnant. I got a regular cold when I was 8 months pg and it was miserable - I was sick for like 3 weeks - so I can't even imagine the flu. But I also know that if I were pg then I would worry about the preservatives.

Just a word of warning, when one is pregnant your immune system is non-existent. So not having gotten the flu in the past is not indicative of what will happen when you are pregnant.

There are flu shots without thermisol. I just got one without thermisol at my doctor's office yesterday.

I had a bad case of the flu during college. Every year since then, I've gotten the flu shot. For me, the benefits outweigh any risks.

My dr. recommended I get it when I was pregnant. That was my first time and I got one last year and made my appointment for next week to get one for this year.
I'm thinking it's OK to get one if you are TTC. I was pregnant and had it.
Knock on wood, I've been pretty healthy.

See now my doctor had me get it in my first trimester with DD#1. I suppose it's up to individual doctors.

Re: flu shot

My dr. said to get one, that any bad aspects of the shot are much better than getting the flu, which can lead to hospitalization when PG. even if you've never gotten the flu before, i think your immune system is compromised when PG, so i wouldn't mess with potentially getting it now.

there is no way to get the flu from the flu shot, btw.

The center for disease control says all PG women SHOULD get the flu vaccine, and are considered a high-risk group.
(from http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/keyfacts.htm)

People who should get vaccinated each year are:

Children aged 6 months up to their 19th birthday
Pregnant women
People 50 years of age and older
People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions
People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
People who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu, including:
a. Health care workers
b. Household contacts of persons at high risk for complications from the flu
c. Household contacts and out of home caregivers of children less than 6 months of age (these children are too young to be vaccinated)
