Fly or Drive to NC with 15 month old?

We have a family trip planned to the Outer Banks and I'm really starting to stress out.

It's a 10 hr drive and for the past couple of months DS has been a terror in the car. He will scream the whole time regardless of whether it is a 5 minute trip to the supermarket or 1 hr drive to my IL's. He used to be so good but now he just screams the whole time and throws his pacifier on the ground.

We tried going during his naptime but he will only sleep in the car for maybe 45 minutes. we tried feeding him in the car. We tried toys. We've tried DVD's. Nothing works to distract him for more then 5-10 minutes at a time.

Now we are considering flying to Norfolk (1 1/2 hrs) and then renting a car to drive the rest of the way (2-3 hours). I figure the breaks between the airport and car will also give him a little time to run around and release some energy.

We can also break up the drive into 2 days but that would mean getting a hotel room somewhere in the middle and it still means 5 hrs in the car (plus an additional day off work)

Any advice on renting a car or travelling with a toddler?

WWYD? Drive all the way as originally planned/drive 1/2 way and get a hotel or fly to VA and then drive?

We have driven back and forth to NC a number of times. What works best for us is driving half way-or as far as we can get-at night-staying over and then finishing the next AM. We leave after work-like at 7 to avoid RH traffic, then drive till 1 am. Then finish the trip the next day-DD will usually take a long morning nap.

But DD sleeps well in the car, so that is what works for us. Flying and then renting would be to stressful for me, plus it may make the trip longer.

We did it last year (with a 7 month old) and will do it again this summer (he will be 19 months)-----for us we have to do the majority the first day, DS does well in the car the first day but is a mess the second. We talked about flying, but in reality there was no way we could bring everything we wanted to bring with us by plane.
What about leaving in the evening? Do you think he will fall asleep in the car at night/when its dark? You could get a big portion out of the way and stop at like 1am like the AP does.

That's my major concern with flying, the whole packing everything we need between the PNP, stroller, and carseat on top of everything else we need to bring. But it would make the trip so much shorter.

I also suggested to DH that we drive late (driving at night till midnight/1AM), exhausting DS that day and hoping that he sleeps most of the way.

I'm just so stressed that he won't sleep the second day and will scream in the car for 4 hours or that we will have to stop every hour to calm him down . . .

Holly,

Does it help if you sit back there with him?

Do you know what has been cheering up my DD in the car lately? Those music CDs they gave us in class! LOL. She has been trying to hum along to them. I sing them to her in the morning and when I feed her and I guess she has learned to recognize it and cheers up when we get in the car. My DD went through a period where she would arch her back and scream bloody murder in the car but it has passed now with the CD and by me bringing her favorite toy that she only gets in the car. Good luck! Chat Icon

Re: Fly or Drive to NC with 15 month old?

We are driving down to NC in a few weeks and DD will be 19 months. As much as flying would be less stressful, there was just too much to pack.

We are leaving about 3am so hopefully DD will sleep at least half of the trip. We will also have my parents in the car, so hopefully DD will be entertained. I am definitely packing some of her favorite stuff!
