Folic Acid?

Hi - new here.... DH and I won't start TTC until next summer or so, but I just have a quick question...

Before I was born, my mom lost a baby in her 8th month. She is now insisting that I start taking folic acid. What exactly does folic acid do and should I takt it even if we are not TTC yet?

Thanks!

Re: Folic Acid?

I got this from a website:

Folate, which is a B vitamin, is naturally found in nuts, liver and dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach.

Folic acid refers to the synthetic form of the vitamin. If women have enough of it in their bodies before pregnancy, this vitamin can decrease the risk for neural tube defects (NTDs), which are birth defects of the baby's brain (anencephaly) or spine (spina bifida). These birth defects are called neural tube defects (NTDs). NTDs happen when the spinal cord fails to close properly.

Hope this helps.

When I told my doc I wanted to start TTC in 6 months, he put me on another 400mcg of Folic Acid (I already had 400mcg in my multi-vitamin).

Re: Folic Acid?

my doctor put me on prenatals as soon as I came off the pill, even though we weren't actively trying until a year after. I don't think it's ever too early!!
