? For HS teacher
My son is in 9th grade and got 2s on his state wide, so he is in math lab and english lab.. What happens if you fail them all year? I know they said he needs them, but for what? TIA.

usually labs like that are pass/fail and they usually are not calculated into their overall gpa

Re: ? For HS teacher
I am an AIS reading teacher for grades k-12. My course is p/f and worth 1 credit. If a student fails my course he/she just has to make up that credit towards the total amount of credits to graduate. I usually make it sound much worse than it is to my students. I tell them they have to go to summer school if they fail it.

Re: ? For HS teacher
really? My class is almost impossible to fail. I don't give HW and I only give a few tests. I try to make it enjoyable by reading interesting books and watching the movie after the book. Most of my kids hate reading and struggle with it (obviously) so I do most of the work in class with them. Does your son get resourse room? He can do extra math practice in there. Also, a lot of hs students in the honor society will tutor for free.

Re: ? For HS teacher
Math labs and English labs are considered AIS services. They usually do not count as a credit but are to help them in their English and math classes. With that being said, in my district the grade they receive for lab counts as 10% of their quarter grade for that subject. It encourages them to do well in English lab for example because the grade will be factored in. I would speak to the lab teacher.

Re: ? For HS teacher
My son has a 504. (which no one is the school seems to care about) anyway, i have heard from a inside source the math lab teacher throws kids out of class all the time.. There is no HW and just classwork, which at this point im assumming my son does nothing since his grade are in the 50s (F).. Funny thing is he is passing english and boaderline pass/failing Math. Math was his strong point untill last year. I also think this math/english lab for any child with ADHD or whatever 9th period is the worst time to have it, alot of children check out by that time. thanks for all the replies.. Dealing with the school seems to be a alost cause lately. My ped wanted my son tested for other learning disablities and i was told why, your son is just insourbornete(sp).. Nice school right? only 3 1/2 years left in there for my son.

If your son has a 504, you should probably speak to the school psychologist and discuss the situation with him/her. ALso, I would speak to the math lab teacher. I agree that 9th period is a rough time of day for any class! But honestly, 9th period can be a great time to offer help as a teacher because the students have had all of their classes already. I teach a 9th period resource room and I love it and the kids love ending their day that way. I would contact the teacher, psychologist and guidance counselor. Good luck!
