For moms of speech delayed kiddies....
Just a random thought I had last night.
During the EI evaluation, I was shocked with how much Josh knew....mainly since he never tells me what he knows
We play our pointing game with our books and flashcards, so I knew he knew all those objects and things.
But he knew so much more. Its like they knew what to test him on even though he's not talking.
I will admit, it gets old singing to a kid that never sings a long. For 24 months, I have been singing the ABCs solo.
But this helped me regain my spirit. They are still sponges, just not letting you know. And when they are verbal, its all going to come out.
I had this thought when Leo was playing cars with him. Leo tells him the specific make of car. Which I thought was great. Even though I always say red car, he knows that...so it adds another fact that he's taking in.
I don't know just a thought.

I am not in that same boat, however my friend was and her DS is now a non stop talking 3 year old. He literally had a few words at 2 yrs old and within a few months he decided to start talking and had a full vocabulary and he knew it all along! It was amazing.

perfect. They come this week to see what our goals are and where we go from here.
I guess I just wanted confirmation, like him to repeat red car, that wasn't happening, so I figured he did not know colors. Its good now to know to move onto the next thing about cars and not have to wait for him to say red car.

Seems like it. I know her son would follow instructions, get things she pointed, to etc., so he had it all in his little rolladex but just didn't feel the need to share it with the world until he was ready!

That's great, Janice!
And you're right...just because they can't say it doesn't mean they don't know it.
Unfortunately, Steven doen'ts have 80 words He has about 10-15.

steph...
10-15 all the time words?
they did not count josh as 80 since they aren't everyday words.
they said he's at a 19 month old level.
its going to be so great to hear what they have to say one day!

Re: For moms of speech delayed kiddies....
Noah was exactly the same Janice, exactly. We had speech therapy when he was just about 26 months and like Josh, she felt that he knew so much and her diagnosis was just that he was delayed and he would catch up, but it would take time.
Lo and behold, the kid is 3 and he can talk the hind legs off of a donkey! They absorb so much, and he says things that I can't believe he knows! He says lots of things that are really regional to this part of England, with a full on Mancunian accent. Its hysterical.
I am sure that Josh will catch up just like Noah has done!

Janice, you described DS to a tee. He just turned 2. Does not have many words at all, but, he totally understands what we are telling him and follows directions pretty well. They definitley absorb everything you're telling them.

I am amazed at what the speech therapist says my daughter can say. And all the things they knew at the testing I was surprised as well.

Re: For moms of speech delayed kiddies....
My niece was similar, understood so much but didnt speak nearly a word. Grunting was all she did. At her 2 month visit her ped suggested a mommy and me type setting that focus on language exercises. We with in a few months the grunter was talking in 3-4 word sentences and hasnt stopped talking since!
Good Luck!
