For moms with infants that have constant breathing issues and/or Asthma??
How do you do it? I cannot take another bout of my DS getting sick. This is like the 10th time in 7 months that he has been on nebulizers, steroids, or both. He has been out of daycare for this entire week. I had to take off of work twice this week and DH had to stay home yesterday. I feel I am on the verge of a break down. We have limited help and he gets sick every other week. I have not slept in an entire week...any words of wisdom??? And to top it all off, another tooth just popped....joy...at this rate...my son will most definitely be an only child for sure!!!!

hang in there mama it is so worrying when they have a hard time breathing.
DD has been suffering alot with breathing and chest problems she has been hospitilized twice since her birth and 1 NICU stay
do you have your own nebulizer at home ???
we were prescribed one and insurance paid for it which makes me feel more at ease but i hate that we have to use steroids so much

Re: For moms with infants that have constant breathing issues and/or Asthma??
I could have written the same post when DS was 7mths old. Every cough turns into a breathing issue requiring the nebulizer & steroids. Now at 2.5yrs old he actually loves the nebulizer and gives it to himself. His first year was hard but as he got older and his immune system stronger he gets sick a LOT less often. Only 2x's this past winter.

Yes, we've had the nebulizer at the house since he was 8 weeks old and was instructed to begin using it with DS at the first sign of a cough. However, despite that, it always turns into a really bad cough with constant wheezing. I just do not think that they can do anything for him.

Re: For moms with infants that have constant breathing issues and/or Asthma??
I know its frustrating because I know for myself DS has been on and off sick all winter and I feel like it is somehow my fault!!!
OUr issue is that my niece has the same breathing issue and the 2 of them are like siblings, constantly together, hugging, kissing, holding hands, sharing food etc. So if we compare drs visits my SIL goes then a week later I go, etc.
We dont have child care issue because my ILs watch DS while I work so even if he is sick I send him there with his medicine. So I am sure that is added stress for you!
But I will say that my Dr put DS on preventative inhalant as she said although it is a steroid it has less long term side effects than him going on the oral steroids multiple times. We give that every day regardless of his health and although he has gotten 2 colds while on it, neither went to his chest so the Dr said that was a success!

Frankie is already on an inhaled steroid daily...which is why i am so frustrated...none of it seems to be working....

Re: For moms with infants that have constant breathing issues and/or Asthma??
This went on for 3 years for us and it took finding the right Dr to change our lives. DD and I literally did not sleep for years, it was terrible, but for us Dr. Goldstein and Dr Satnick (in Holbrook)pulmonoligist/allergist changed our lives forever for the better!

Re: For moms with infants that have constant breathing issues and/or Asthma??
Have you seen a pulmonoligist yet? We've seen Dr. Dmitri Vaysman at the children's center associated with Good Sam on Deer Park Ave since DS was hospitalized with pnuemonia and diagnosed with asmtha. We go through the same thing every winter.
What dosage is the inhaled steriod? The first year when DS was worse he was on .5 of pulmicort. This year he was a little better and they only put him on .25. Maybe the dosage could be an issue.
Get a second opinion and see a specialist!

Re: For moms with infants that have constant breathing issues and/or Asthma??
I am crying with you while I read this.
Honestly, I have no idea how someone can hold a job and have a kid with asthma.
Sometimes we are out of commission for a week straight. We can't leave the house, no one sleeps a wink for the week.
I am so sorry you are going through this.
My heart breaks for you, I can't imagine going through this with an infant. Ours struck last June and I have never been so stressed, overweight, tired as I have been these past 12 months. It effects so much of my life even though I try not to let it.
We have had a really great month...cough free and only one night of wheezing. This month, we ripped up carpets in Josh's room, took down curtains, all toys are removed...the room is completely sterile. Hypo pillows and bedcovers. No one, not even him, can go on bed unless he is showered with new clothes on. Linens are washed 3 times a week. Windows are never open.
I have also read to get them on a gluten free diet...so for the most part, we follow this.
He is on pulmicort twice a day.
I am in zero rush to get him into preschool or anything like that...his worse trigger is being around a kid with a cold.

Re: For moms with infants that have constant breathing issues and/or Asthma??
also...I don't know the price difference, but I would see about finding a nanny rather then daycare. I watch another boy and just that single boy is what caused last month to be hell since he came on a monday morning with a chest cold.
If you have carpets, get the asthma dyson.
I have shotty insurance, so any money I spend to prevent ER visits is money that I will save later on.
Last year we took such a hit, ambulence, 5 day stay, 4 ER visits, pulm co pays, prescribitons, new floors, bedding, dyson...we bought our house to get out of our carpeted apt.
I hate the meds...everyday we go without using the emergency med I give us a pat on the back.

Re: For moms with infants that have constant breathing issues and/or Asthma??
This is one of the reasons why I stopped working FT and stopped daycare. Everyone told me that he was going to build immunity and it was really bad. He would be sick non stop for 2 months.
I could not take it and worry anytime he would catch a cold that he would start wheezing.
Since he is 1, he has been on the nebulizer everyday. I have to say it has really helped him a lot. He only got a very small cold last winter for a couple of days.

see frankie has had this problem long before daycare...he began going at six months old and started these problems at 8 weeks old. Quite frankly a nanny at my house scares the crap out of me. So I am not sure that will help the situation and I cannot keep my kid sheltered from the outside world. It's just sooo frustrating that every little sniffle turns into a major respitory issue.

Re: For moms with infants that have constant breathing issues and/or Asthma??
I don't know much about daycares, but is he on carpets there?
I know every kid's asthma is different, but mine can't handle rugs and carpets...he does so much better on floors. his whole personality changed when he started sleeping carpet free.
I was just thinking nanny so maybe you would not have to call in and she would be willing to stay with him while he's sick...but you probably want to be home with him anyway.

we have no carpets in the house, all wood floors. he is being allergy tested in a few weeks...and god help me if it's our dogs...although the pulmonoligst said cat allergies are way more common than dog allergies.
My asthma may play a big part in his issues as my mom said that i suffered the same way and often, still do. Only time will tell i suppose if he grows out of it. I just feel so helpless sometimes. I cried myself to work yesterday.

Re: For moms with infants that have constant breathing issues and/or Asthma??
Josh has a dog allergy...no cat allergy.
which is such a PITA when trying to make mom friends and go to playdates.
I don't have asthma, just allergies. To cats, not dogs
I hope his test results are helpful. Ours were extrememly helpful. He is badly allergic to some trees, not others...so if the tree count is up, we stay in.
I def tend to shelter him if elements aren't ideal...I can't cope with these episodes anymore. I use to just bring his spacer and neb everywhere...but now a trigger will last 5 days.

Re: For moms with infants that have constant breathing issues and/or Asthma??
Oh I am so sorry for you! The stress of it all must be overwhelming.
My daughter doesnt have any breathing issues as of yet - however i had terrible asthma as a child (i have since grown out of it for the most part)so maybe i can give you a couple of ideas...
No carpets, use febreeze allergen reducer and vacuum counches regularly, vacuum floors instead of sweeping, no scented candles and buy air purifiers if you can (they work wonders)
