For those doing Cord Blood Banking a ? re: Drs Fees

I had finally come to the conclusion that we were going to bank the baby's cord blood. I had come to terms with the initial cost and the yearly fees from the cord blood company, when all of a sudden I realized that my OBGYN would probably need a fee for doing the actual collection. I (stupidly) was expecting the fee to be around $125. I called up and they told me that the charge is $400 dollars. I am so upset only because I feel like this is another huge expense on top of something that was already costing so much money. While DH and I have the money to pay these fees, its not exactly like we are rolling in money and this is a big hit on top of an already big hit.

My question is what did your OBGYNs offiices charge for the collecting of the cord blood in the hospital? Is $400 a completely standard number?

What company are you banking with?

We went with CBR and with a bill from he doctor and a letter from your insurance that they do not cover the cost of the collection, CBR will reimburse you for the fee.

Mine did not charge a fee.

We had just enrolled with Viacord, if I had researched that before it may have helped change my opionion to CBR. Totally my mistake for not being on top of this ahead of time.

I'm a little annoyed that it looks like my Drs office is decently higher than everyone elses, not quite sure why thats the case

My OB charges $250 for the collection fee.

They then submit it to our insurance to see if it's covered & they'll pick it up, but I called and my plan isn't covering yet so we'll be paying it out of pocket

That is A LOT of money for the OB to charge. My OB charge either $100 or $125. Can't remember. $400 is outrageous........why would they be charging so much???

Thank you everyone for your answers. I am REALLY angry that my Dr. is charging so much more than what seems to be the norm. I feel so stuck though because after weighing all of the options we decided we wanted to do the banking, so now at 34 weeks I don't really have much of a choice. While an extra $150 (over what most of you seemed to be paying) isn't life altering I just feel like it is so unecessary. I only talked to someone over the phone in the office and she said it was $400, when I go to my appointment on Tue I am going to bring it up to the doctor and question why they are so much higher, it just doesn't seem right. Mine charged $125 I believe.
$400 is ridiculous!!
