For those looking to replace food and not trusting grocery stores....
Try Target. Apparently they have really strict food safety guidelines.
Last week I was standing in line and the woman next to me had a giant stack of frozen food that she didn't want because it was in the clearance section but not on clearance.
One of the supervisors came to throw out everything the woman was not purchasing! (Looked like about 10 pizzas and a bunch of frozen dinners.) T
hey went back and forth and the woman was adamant that she only had the food in the cart for 5 minutes but the supervisor said,
"As soon as the food feels even a little bit wet, we can't put it back to sell. We MUST throw it out."
Guess where I'm going to restock!

The thing that confuses me about this is if they were going to throw it out, why not just give it to her for the clearance price?

I know, right? At least I can trust that the food is safe. LOL

This is actually totally silly and a giant waste of perfectly edible food. I cannot stand food waste like this. At least put it in a freezer in the back and see if any charities will pick it up as a donation to give away to someone who needs it!!!!!!

Because I'm sure Target has gotten sued at some point for someone getting sick from food that was questionable from their store. Even if they didn't actually get sick from Target food, I'm sure they were sued for it..... our entire society is based on CYA and not getting sued....

Precisely. If, God forbid, anyone who ate that food became sick, then she would obviously come out and say "Target sold me food that they knew was not safe.....now pay me!!"

Re: For those looking to replace food and not trusting grocery stores....
I went to both Stop N Shop and Target on Monday and target's entire grocery section was taped off, yet stop n shop had everything open and ready to be bought.
I really questioned the freshness of everything being sold at SNS. I know that their power was out too, I drove by on Sunday and the lights were off and noone was there. I don't know what kind of backup electricity they have but I didn't feel comfortable buying meat and dairy from them after I saw their power out for the entire day!

Our Stop and Shop got rid of all their meat and dairy. Might have been wasteful, but like PP said, they can't risk a suit.

I work at costco and I can tell you that we do not put ANY perishable returns back on the shelves. We throw them out and get some credit from the vendor they originated from. Were also very strict about stuff that is left unrefrigerated for a certain amount of time :) You can be safe at Costco! :)
PSA for Costco over!
