For those of you having a baby nurse
How long are you having the baby nurse stay with you after the baby is born? I'm still trying to figure that out. Thanks!

Re: For those of you having a baby nurse
We are having one as of now for just a week. It might be helpful to have someone around right when we bring the baby home with our immediate questions and concerns, but after that we want to be just us.

Re: For those of you having a baby nurse
We're trying to decide between one week and two weeks. My DH really doesn't like the idea of having someone stay with us, but I think it will be so helpful on a number of levels. If it's up to him, it'll be one week, but I think I'd really prefer two.

Re: For those of you having a baby nurse
I am not having one, but a friend did. She stayed with them for one week from the time she came home from the hospital.

Re: For those of you having a baby nurse
I found that I could only decide what I wanted when I spoke to the baby nurses about what they do. So far, I did not have a nurse for any extended period but I had one to help me through my son's bris this past weekend. She arrived the night before and left a few hours after our guests went home. She is coming back to help us remove the gauze. She is an RN, not just someone who calls herself a baby nurse. This worked out a lot better than having someone stay with us for a week or 2. I would not have felt comfortable having someone in my house while I was going through all the post partum moods. Plus, my son being in the NICU for six days meant that we learned a lot form the nurses there. I would not wish that experience on anyone but they taught us so much about baby care. If you are thinking about a nurse, talk to a few of them. Also consider a part time doula.

Re: For those of you having a baby nurse
I didn't have one, but I wish I did.
I would recommend one for 2 weeks or longer. The first week and a half was really rough for me. Having a baby nurse to help you transition and catch up on the sleep in the beginning is great! I have a few friends who had one and I totally mocked them for it - but now I totally see the value of one.

Re: For those of you having a baby nurse
With DD #1 I had one for 9 days. With DD#2 I have one reserved for 2-4 weeks, we'll see how I feel.

Re: For those of you having a baby nurse
I have her for 1 1/2 months for #2. For #1, I had her for 2 weeks and it was a lifesaver. The reason why I got her for so long now is that I need another pair of hands- DH works really long demanding hours and dd#1 Carolyn will be needy and want a good deal of attention from me. I want to be sure I will be there for her.
