for those of you who have a DC receiving EI speech services
what age did they qualify? what types of things weren't they doing that qualified them for EI? DS is two and is getting evaluated soon and I am wondering what they are looking for specifically. Thanks

Re: for those of you who have a DC receiving EI speech services
They have to have a certain larger delay in one area to qualify or smaller delays in 3 areas. Not sure of the percentages.
DS has a wide vocabulary but wasnt putting words together. He started in June and just had his 6 mo. evaluation and will no longer be receiving services because he did so well.
During the evaluation they ask you questions. They will ask him questions to test his receptive and expressive language. They will look at his ability to follow direction (point to your nose, point to your eyes). Initially we had 2 evaluators which took about an hour each and than he got an OT evaluation later on.

Re: for those of you who have a DC receiving EI speech services
In order to qualify for EI the child needs to have a 33% delay in one area OR a 25% delay in two or more areas.
DS qualified for EI at 12 months for on a gross motor skill delay (more than 33%). We started speech at 24 months. I don't know what the specific criteria is for 24 months but I have to imagine they're looking for a typical number of single words, possibly even two and three word combinations, maybe observe oral motor skills, listen for sounds. They look for both expressive and receptive language (following directions, etc).
My son basically wasn't really saying anything, just a lot of whining and yelling. A few sounds. Maybe less than 5 words. His oral motor movement was very low.

Re: for those of you who have a DC receiving EI speech services
DS is already receiving PT through EI...I am familiar with the percentiles, etc. I am just unsure what exactly speech evaluators are looking for (I guess I am trying to gauge whether or not he'll qulaify....for PT I knew he would)

Re: for those of you who have a DC receiving EI speech services
Noah was 18-19 months. He was not speaking at all. HE had some sounds, no constants and very little babble. His only "sound" was " nana" for his pacifier which we called " nunu".
HTH a little?
At age 2 he could say maybe 15 words.
( he is 30 months now and talking up a storm...so EI WORKS!)

Re: for those of you who have a DC receiving EI speech services
My DS started receiving EI services at about 23 months. I had him tested after he had 5 consecutive ear infections, and seemed to lose some of the speech he had already acquired. I of course had his hearing checked too (audiological, ENT).
His receptive language at the time was actually lower than his expressive. But both scores had him qualify. DS still receives speech through EI and we just recently had his CPSE meeting and he qualified through that as well.
