Jack qualified for Speech services through EI
I just wanted to share since I have been talking about this in some posts!
He JUST barely qualified - but he did and that's all that counts! I am beyond thrilled to have him working with professionals who know the right things to do to stimulate him and hopefully have his speech progress!
Just wanted to share for those mothers who are unsure if their children need services - it NEVER hurts to call and take the first step. If he didn't qualify that would have been fine too - but I'm happy that we will help his speech along with a professional!

That's great! I am having my son evaluated just because i am noticing some things are not developing as quickly as his peers. I have mixed emotions about him qualifying or not, but I feel like just barely qualifying is the best of both worlds! You know that there isn't a serious problem but you still get the services. Good luck!

They actually send two people over. One to evaluate your concern (mine was speech) and one who evaluates him entirely (fine motor skills, gross motor skills, interaction, eye contact etc) and within two minutes of being there she said that Jack is fine in all other areas (which I already knew but it was really good to hear from a professional!)

That's great! Looking forward to hearing about your experience....DD is 14 months and babbles a TON, but really has no word except mama and dada.

My friend has had her son in speech for a few months now and he's progressed SO much, it's unbelievable!

That's great news Diana!!!! I actually called to have DD evaluated also. I figured since it's a free service it couldn't hurt. I can't wait to hear how Jack is progressing!

that's great!!! I know this will give you lots of peace of mind now knowing he will be working with a speech therapist. I bet pretty soon you won't be able to shut him up -- haha!!!
What kind of testing did they do with him to evaulate? Did they give you any benchmarks for 18 months? Just curious.

At 18 months they should have at least 5 consonants - Jack only has 2 (Dada and Mmm)
He really doesn't have any true words besides Dada. He uses it towards my husband - and also as random babble throughout the day.
They came here and actually just played with him and watched how he interacted - and if he understood what she was asking. His receptive skills were very good - but there were certain things that he was not consistent with (Ex: Give me the ball - he wouldn't give her the ball - but mainly we all think that's because he is too stubborn and doesn't want to share  )
She brought out a teddy bear and asked him to feed the teddy.
He had to build with some blocks
I'm trying to think what else.

that is great news. I just called for Logan. I see him getting frustrated and crying because he can't tell me what he wants, I just want to hear his little voice say any word at least one  .
Look forward to hearing how Jack's progress will come along.

i'm also an SLP and wanted to say the same thing!  i know we've talked a couple times on here about it.. i'm so glad hes going to get the help he needs!
and, like sasha said.. the biggest thing with EI is that its SOOOO important that you are right there with him and the therapist during his sessions to see the kinds of things they do with him, and keep up with anything they tell you to do with him in between sessions. i work in a school and i can definitely tell when the parents are working with the kids at home.
i'm sure he'll do GREAT! keep us posted!

Thats so good. Wait until you see what he will be saying in just a couple of weeks. My DD didnt have speech but she did have PT and within a week of therapy she was doing things that I have never seen before.
EI works wonders. You will be so happy with the outcome.
