For those soon to be moms wondering whether to get a video monitors

I see questions about what to put on your registry. I just wanted to give you a mom's perspective on video monitors. Ours was always a nice thing - to be able to see DD and know she was okay but last night I was never more thankful I got the video one. I know some people love them others don't.

DD had a spasmotic croup episode and I awoke to strange noises and looked at the video to see her struggling - I went in to find her having trouble breathing and not being able to cry or speak to call us.

If you only need a monitor for one reason - get one for peace of mind. I see people say I don't need one b.c my child's room is right next door and they will cry if they need me - for us DD's room is right next door to ours and without that monitor I would never have heard her needing me since she couldn't cry or call to alert me -she is 11 months.

Hope this helps another mom out there.Chat Icon Chat Icon

She is much better but is still wheezing and an occasional yucky cough as the afternoon progresses - but I understand croup gets worse at night so I'm not sure if we will have a repeat tonight or not but we are sleeping next to her tonight.

I didn't mean to scare anyone but know some people debate getting a monitor b.c they child is in the next room so I thought I would just share my story if it could help another mom.

I totally agree. I tell every single new mom that I meet that the best monitor to have is the video.

Our room is right across the hall from my sons - so I hear him cry without the volume on - but I am able to check it to see if he really wants out - or is just fussing. Without it, I would probably go into his room with every little cry - and neither of us would get much sleep

That's so scary about Kaitlyn - thank god she's ok! Poor thing!

I also love my video monitor. My DH and I sometimes just stare at him in the video monitor when we are lying in bed. I can't imagine living without it.

I usually turn down the volume too since she is right next door to us - but thank god I forgot last night - b.c the ped said the croup caused like a laryingitis so she when she tried to cry or talk it came out distorted like a whisper etc. So I wouldn't have heard her without the sound.

Love our video monitor.

I agree with the PP who said you can see if they are crying b/c they need you or if they are just fussing.

Glad to hear your DD is okay!

ITA

Both my DC's rooms are right next door to mine and I have a video monitor set up in both rooms.

I loved this past 18 months having one with DD. One night I thought she was just coughing only to see her vomitting all over herself. She didn't even cry.

I can tell if she's "crying" in her sleep or actually awake and needing attention. I do keep the sound down because she's next door, but I'm a light sleeper and check the video every time I roll over.

Hope your DD is ok!!!Chat Icon

The video monitor was the best gift I have ever received!!!! It gave me(and still gives me) peace of mind. As a infant I got to watch for breathing and all of the scary new mom fears and as my DD approached 2 I caught her before she jumped out of her crib on several occassions. Scan a Summer Handheld monitor on that registry!!!

Thank you - she was much better last night - but it will probably be a few nights before I put her back in the crib the ped wants her sleeping upright for a few nights - she woke twice with a yucky cough (but not coughing that much) and lots of wheezing but nothing scary - just not great sounding but she wasn't upset about it.

We have the Summer Handheld one - so if I want to go to another room I can take it with me.

I also have the Summer handheld monitor. We are getting a second camera for the new baby's room so we can keep an eye on both kids.
