Whatever that means to you for health reasons.....vegan, veg, organic, non GMO, unprocessed foods, no additives, etc do you wear makeup, dye your hair, polish your nails or use beauty products? What about your family?
Is every single one of the products you use on your body safe in the way you eat your food?

Edited to change title to include more people...

For those that are vegan

I've been down a few paths......but i'm not currently vegan.

I can tell you that *generally* vegans who are really dedicated to this lifestyle either for health or karma - they will use make up, hair dye, polish etc...........but it will be all natural. Shampoo, deodorant.....some even forgo deodorant totally, as some feel that after much time of eating clean, you don't smell as much. I have heard of people dry brushing their skin. It all varies on how much you are committed, I suppose.

They will order makeup online, use a nail polish that is free of everything...etc. You can purchase some items in specialty stores, though.

This is a brand of nail polish......called WaterColors. I have tried it and loved it. There are so many vegan products out there, so they can be found.

External Image .you can read about it here and see the ingrediants and what is NOT in it

I have a friend who has been vegan for years- her entire adult life, I would say. Won't even buy nonvegan food or treats for her pets...won't buy down pillows or blankets..even bird food for her garden has to be vegan. No leather couches, that sort of thing. She wears make up but it's all special and mostly ordered online.

if you have any questions or need any reccs, let me know. GLad to help.

I'm not vegan. I am vegetarian and am currently in the process of replacing all my "unclean" products. I have gotten rid of lots of possibly toxic item. At the moment, I still need to buy new makeup, shower gel , shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste. Trader Joe's has excellent prices on some of these items as does vitacoast.

Thanks very helpful! The 2 vegans I know use minimal beauty products actually they became vegan because of their mothers cancer diagnosis. I am also wondering for those that are not vegan but changed what they eat if they do the same.

Gotcha. Well I try my best to eat pure but I must admit - still can't get rid of certain products. I'm still prone to breaking out and the products I use to combat it are full of bad stuff. Do you have that link that you can type in a product and it will tell you how bad it is for you based on chemicals? I have it somewhere and can forward it to you if you want.

For my skin troubles I have used the natural stuff. Tea tree oil, zinc (which dries up blemishes fast) but I just don't find it works as well as the bad chemical products. :(

I have explored raw food. I went awhile being raw. Never felt better. My skin was amazing and my eyes clear as anything - bright and just glowy. I really believe in that lifestyle. It's just hard to maintain and can be costly.

I'm kind of an experience junkie. I like trying new things and using them as an experiment.

Re: For those that eat "clean"

I've been vegetarian for 20 years, and have eliminated most processed foods from my diet.

We use only green cleaners in the house...anything I can't make on my own, I buy.

As far as products/toiletries/makeup go, I only buy things that are not tested on animals...right there, that eliminates MANY brands on the market. I try to stick with things that are most natural - I get some stuff from Trader Joe's, other things from Whole Foods, soap from a woman in PA who makes her own.

We're also a fur-, suede- and leather-free household. DH used to wear leather - well, technically he still does, but he has stopped buying shoes and belts made of it - but I haven't worn it in so many years.

For us, there is no difference between our cats, a cow bred for leather, a pig bred for meat, or a rabbit being used for cosmetic testing.

Mooshoes is awesome...they have a shop downtown :)

Really, a LOT of companies are going with man-made material, especially when it comes to shoes. Zappos has a search feature where you can limit your selection based on the materials used. I just got a great pair of Madden Girl boots, man-made material, a few months ago :)

Re: For those that eat "clean"

I am vegan till it comes to fashion

I am not vegan for animal rights reasons- I am strictly vegan for my own health- I follow a whole food plant based diet with no gluten or processed foods- I don't even eat tofu or mock meats

that being said- the extends to cleaning products and beauty products- I made the mistake of doing this all in 1 weekend- very expensive

I admit I love fashion too much to stop wearing leather shoes and bags- I will buy a vegan product when presented with a great option- I have vegan leather leggings that I love and get tons of compliments on

and I do have many man made leather shoes and I am pretty sure LV is mostly vinyl- if only Gucci would get on board

This is exactly what I was wondering. You eat "clean" for health reasons and since toxins, chemicals, and other junk get absorbed into your body through hair, skin, nails and nose, people who eat this way should also be making these other changes. But, I don't think most are.....

I can only speak from my own experience, but most people I know who are really into clean eating are pretty aware of the toxins in beauty products/ home products and replace them with natural/ non toxic items. That could just be my experience though...

Re: For those that eat "clean"

We eat mostly an organic diet. It didn't happen immediately but other things followed. I make my own house cleaners, i replaced lotion w/ coconut oil. Most of the stuff I use for my hair is all natural.

There are some exceptions. Love Hello Hydration conditioner. Make up I can barely afford the drug store ones so they aren't natural, but I only where makeup around 4x a month.

Me and my son use basically all natural items even down to sunscreen and bug spray. My dh however still uses lotions and cleans with toxic cleaners.

Re: For those that eat "clean"

I eat 75% vegan, 100% vegetarian...I use as many natural things as possible. I use natural cleaners, sprays, and things like shampoos, deodorants, toothpastes...etc. I still have a long way to go, mostly my make up is the hardest thing to change over because I am a high end make up junkie and have not found similar but I do think someday I will make more of a switch over there, I do it in small steps now..I do what I can.

I know this is old but I'm looking for some natural make up brands. Does anyone know of any and do they actually work? How about nail polish and conditioner? I can't find a natural conditioner that works on my fine, knotty hair. I can never get the knots out!
