? for those that hired nannies/babysitters you didn't know at first

I put an ad on craigslist for a mothers helper just to see what kind of responses I'd get. So far I got 10 responses.

I was wondering, if you hired someone you didn't know:
1. Where did you first interview them (at your house, their house etc?)

2. Were you home the first few times they babysat?

3. How did you know you could trust them?

The ad I placed is for someone to watch the baby while I'm home working or getting household stuff done...so its not like I'll be leaving him w/a total stranger. I'm hoping to eventually build up the trust to have someone that I can leave him with, alone, at some point. Thoughts/experiences? TIA!

I have a full-time nanny who is work DD 5 days a week.
I interviewed her in my home.
I stayed home for a few weeks while she was starting. I hired her a few weeks before I went back to work so I could tell if she was going to work out.
After a few days I knew I could trust her. I started going out little by little and I saw that when I came home, DD was clean, fed and happy.

It's very VERY hard to do. But call and check multiple references. I wanted someone with at least 2 references. And if you can stay home the first few times just to make sure.

- I met her at a local Starbucks for the first meeting. The second meeting was at my home to make sure she was comfortable.

2. Were you home the first few times they babysat? Yes, she started 2 weeks before I went back to work.

3. How did you know you could trust them? Honestly, just the impression I got of her. I also did do a background check but I wouldn't have spent that money had I had any doubts. I used it more to reassure myself. I also had nanny cams and could see what she was doing online. I never caught her doing anything she shouldn't have or that she lied to me about.

I really lucked out and completey trust her with my children. She is wonderful with them and my dd adores her.
