for those that think my chicken is pretty* graphic pics*
And like animals in general, here are pics of "broiler chickens"-meaning they are raised to become chicken we eat that were rescued from Tyson farms by someone I know on my chicken message board. You can clearly see the difference between chickens that are cared for & the ones that are tortured in the poultry plants of this country. These pics are after she washed them & treated their wounds. This guy has the beginning of gangrene but would have become food anyway
this guy can no longer stand or walk because his body grew too fast & his legs dont support him
And this girl fell off a transport truck(which started the whole rescue) the other side of her face is all smashed & she has to be fed with a dropper.
Any of these chickens(she took about 15) are prone to cardiac arrest even though they are only several weeks old. Our government & the poultry companies will tell us they aren't using steriods, but I ask how did these chickens get so big in only a few weeks? It took Sunny a year & half to get to the size she is in the pic I posted.
I eat meat & poultry, but i try to buy products that I believe are raised in the most humane way possible.
Just thought this info might be helpful to people.

Seriously, this thread is similiar to the puppy mill threads. I understand the point you are trying to make, but honestly, if you are trying to make the rest of the world feel guilty for eating chicken...this is just getting ridiculous IMHO.

"seriously" I didn't participate in the puppy mill threads & I'M NOT telling people not to eat chicken, I eat chicken often & have no plans of stopping. Many people replied that my chicken Sunny that I posted a pic of is very pretty & I think most people would WANT to know that the majority of chickens we eat are not so fortunate. If you feel you already know enough about everything in life & you don't need any new information to enhance your lifestyle or awareness, kudos to you.

you know what, I need to say this
this is WHAT IS HAPPENING to these animals....life is not all roses and sunshine

Re: for those that think my chicken is pretty
Free range is most certainly not all you think it is. The USDA allows the use of the free range egg label for a farm that allows the hen access to the outside for at least 5 minutes per day. It does not mention that the hen even has to get up from the cage and actually go outside; it just has to have access. There is no mention of the fact that the hen has to eat healthy food i.e. food that is hormone and anti-biotic free; certainly not the impression that is given with the term free range eggs.
Eating animal is a personal choice, I do not and it is based on the fact conditions are inhumane.

Re: for those that think my chicken is pretty
I too see nothing wrong with this thread. I don't perceive her to be forcing her opinion on anyone, being preachy, or assaulting people with judgements.
She's not belittling anyone for their choices. She is merely informing, and there's nothing wrong with that. If it offends, there's no need to continue reading this thread. But let the rest of us have a mature discussion about it, please?
Kelly, thank you for posting this. We have been selective about the chicken we purchase for a long time, although what LifeisGreat had to post worries me.
If anyone has some good unbiased websites to learn more about what can and cannot be considered "free range" or "cage free", I would much appreciate the reading material.

I love animals and would never do anything deliberately to harm them...but coming on here to make others feel guilty about what they do in their life is to me not the way to go about changing how animals are treated. I will not say any more about this for fear of creating more drama.

You are totally right - I am a vegetarian. After learning about factory farms and the treatment of these animals I decided to go meat-free. Unfortunately, the USDA doesn't regulate these factory farms or the terms they use and even though its 'free range' it normally doesn't mean what we all think it means.

I understand what you're saying but it's like the other threads, it's about education. I don't think she's trying to make you feel guilty, that is something we do to ourselves. I think she's just trying to educate us so that we can make more informed decisions about where we buy our meat, just like the education about buying from a pet store or not wearing fur.
Drama is when people name call or berate each other, debating is about exchanging ideas and education, I don’t think there’s drama here… yet

Kelly is cleary not TRYING to make anyone feel guilty. She is simply sharing info for those of us who are interested. And we are. And I don't feel guilty b/c she is MAKING me, I feel guilty b/c I already know what she says is true. Nothing wrong with this thread. Nothing wrong with education and do what you want with it. She was sharing that's all.

Is this the same for chicken that is organic, no-anitbiotincs, vegetarian/grain fed, and free range? This is what I buy. Same for eggs.

Re: for those that think my chicken is pretty
Great resource
www.farmsanctuary.org - "FREE-RANGE" BIRDS RAISED FOR MEAT
Birds raised in the United States for meat - mainly chickens and turkeys - may be sold as "range" if they have U.S. Department of Agriculture certified access to the outdoors. No other criteria, such as environmental quality, size of area, number of birds, or space per bird, are included in this term. A USDA staffer told UPC, "Places I've visited may have just a gravel yard with no alfalfa or other vegetation. The birds can exercise, but cannot range--that is, sustain themselves."
"FREE-RANGE" HENS KEPT FOR EGGS
Free-range hens are debeaked at the hatchery the same as battery-caged hens. Debeaking is a painful mutilation that impairs the hens' ability to eat normally and to preen (practice bodily hygiene). Typically, 2,000 or more hens - each hen having only 1 to 2 square feet of floor space - are confined in a shed without access to the outdoors during their lives. If the hens can go outside, the exit usually is very small allowing only the closest hens to get out. The yard may be nothing but a mud yard saturated with droppings and intestinal coccidia and other parasites. For free range to work, the land must be kept fresh. Hens spend much of their time close to the house, scratching, dust bathing, and wearing away the grass. A static house and pasture become unsanitary when hundreds or thousands of birds are collected in a small area. A system of rotation is needed.
Free range does not solve the problem of oversized flocks, or the unnatural isolation of the birds from other sexes and age-groups of their species and from other species. To date, there is no legal or commercial definition of husbandry terms regulating the sale of eggs in the U.S. There are no standards governing the term or the claim "range" or similar advertisements on egg cartons, such as "free running," "free roaming," or "free walking."
Though chickens can live active lives for 7 to 15 years, at the end of a year or two, "free-range" hens are hauled to slaughter the same as battery-caged hens. "Spent" fowl, regardless of whether they were caged or free-range, go to a slaughter plant, live poultry market, or live animal auction.
"FREE-RANGE" MALE CHICKS ARE TRASHED AT BIRTH
Egg production produces "excess" roosters with no commercial value. (Over half of the chicks hatched are roosters.) For this reason, the baby brothers of the "free-range" hens are suffocated to death or ground up alive at the hatchery the same as those of battery-caged hens.
What Can I Do?
Replace eggs and products with eggs or egg whites in your diet with egg-free alternatives
To leaven, bind, and liquefy in baking:
2 Tbsp. mashed banana or apricot + 1/2 tsp. baking powder for 1 egg. (Or 1 banana for 1 egg.) Commercial powdered egg replacer such as ENER-G, Jolly Joan or Golden Harvest. Made of refined starches, modified vegetable gums and leavening. 1 to 1 1/2 tsp. egg replacer + 2 Tbsp. water for 1 egg. Applesauce or apple butter. 2 Tbsp. to 1/4 cup for 1 egg. Commercial fruit-based purees such as WonderSlim and Just Like Shortenin'. Made mainly of dried plums. Excellent for desserts, pancakes, muffins, etc. 2 Tbsp. to 1/4 cup for 1 egg. Two Tbsp. cornstarch, arrowroot flour, soft tofu, or potato starch for one egg. 1 Tbsp. flax seeds + 1 cup water for 1 egg. Blend flax seeds and water in blender for 1 to 2 minutes till mixture is thick and has the consistency of a beaten egg.
To hold things together in casseroles, burgers, and loaves, add a little more vegetable oil. Experiment also with tomato paste, mashed potato, mashed avocado, tahini (sesame butter), peanut butter or nut butters, moistened bread crumbs, quick-cooking tapioca, or quick oats.
For lightness, use some extra yeast or baking soda. Also use fruit juice or tomato juice to replace some or all of the liquid in a recipe. You can also use soft pastry flour instead of, or in addition to, regular flour for cakes.

Re: for those that think my chicken is pretty
wow - this makes me ill for these poor creatures. I know the pictures are disturbing, but that is the reality. Actually - those pictures aren't half bad considering what some of these birds go through before they end up on your plate.
After seeing a "meet your meat" documentary, I stopped eating poultry. (but its been creeping back in my diet!)
What really made me sick is that they are selling us diseased and hormone treated meat.
Kelly - can you offer some advice on where to buy some better chicken? I'm sure that anything I get in the stop and shop was probably treated inhumanely.

Re: for those that think my chicken is pretty
It was helpful for me to see the difference in that I just saw your photo of your healthy chicken and I don't think I would have known that there is such an obvious visible difference. What sux is that not a lot of people who do want to eat meat want to spend a ton of time learning about what labels to look for and the labelling is obviously not always something that we can take at face value. I think about that when I buy eggs, too.

Re: for those that think my chicken is pretty
Thanks for posting. The way our chickens, cows, turkeys, etc are treated is deplorable. I don't oppose people eating meat but it can be done humanely, and it's terrible that it's not
Thanks for doing great things for animals
