For those who switched to gas- did you remove your oil tank or have it filled with sand?

When we first interviewed contractors, one guy told us we could fill our oil tank with sand when we switched. Now our plumber is saying we have to take it out, which costs $1500! Do we have to take it out?

If its not being used you have to either remove it or fill it with sand/foam, If Im not mistaken legally you have to do either one.
Make sure you save the paperwork that your tank has been filled with sand/foam or that it has been removed just incase you sell the house one day and you have proof that it was done so you have no issues selling it.

our tank was in the basement and DH and family and friends (a total of 5 guys) dragged and carried it out of my house. they had to bring it up a flight of stairs but it was so worth not having it in the basement anymore!!!! We had oil still in the tank and found a guy who came and pumped it out for free

I don't believe you have to do either, but for resale value of your house, I do recommend doing one of them (preferably removing it). Our house was already converted to gas when we bought it, but the huge tank was in the basement so we had it removed. It cost about $1k but it's gone and disposed of and we have paperwork showing it's gone. (I think we also sent something to the Village letting them know.) So when we sell the house we have proof it was removed of properly. It opened up so much space in the basement!

we had a contractor already in the house, so I don't the fee, but we removed ours. We have a Hi-Ranch, so it was located underneath the stairs. So now we have a cubby hole/storage under the stairs. It was worth taking it out to us.
IMPORTANT: if you don't take the tank out and have it filled, that is fine, but please make sure you have the pipes removed from the outside of your home. I have heard too many bad stories of oil deliveries to the wrong home and then you have oil in your basement. We had our pipes removed and I'm really glad we did. You just never know.
