Former Sen. Alfonse D'Amato to become a dad at age 70 July 13, 2007 NEW YORK (AP) -- Former Sen. Alfonse D'Amato is looking forward to a couple of big milestones: his 70th birthday and a new baby.
"If you had told me this prior to getting married, I would have said you're out of your mind," D'Amato joked on Friday as he confirmed that his wife, Katuria D'Amato, 41, is expecting a baby sometime next February.
The D'Amatos celebrate their third anniversary next week; his birthday is Aug. 1.
"We're tremendously blessed. God has given us this wonderful news and we're very excited about it," D'Amato told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.
Katuria D'Amato, an attorney, is also a member of the Town of Hempstead Zoning Appeals Board on Long Island.
The baby business isn't exactly new to D'Amato. The three-term senator, who now runs a consulting firm, has four adult children from his previous marriage and 14 grandchildren. But he may be a little rusty.
"Last time around was so long ago that I really can't recall," he conceded - though he hasn't forgotten the joys of diaper duty.
If the baby's a boy, he'll probably be named Alfonse Marcello Jr. If it's a girl, "Kat will decide."

Why is it ok for him to be a Dad at 70, when a lot of folks get upset at older women (50's) having children?

although a new life is always a blessing - I think it is unfair to a child to have them when you are 70 - he wont be around very long to be dad to his kid. It's kind of sad.

I just find it hard to believe that someone would actually "do the deed" with him. He's so disgusting.

I agree, honestly, I think it is kind of selfish in a way to have a baby at 70.....

Well just for the heck of it I'm going to take the other side of the arguement.
I have a few friends with father's that are 20-30 years older than them and they never saw their father's because they were dedicated to their careers or they were lousy fathers....
There are so many different points of view. As long as the kid is loved - I don't see a problem with it.

I agree with the fact that as long as the child is shown love, that is all that matters. I guess, who am I to say anything...just think it is kinda wierd.
BTW: my dad got re-married and had a son when he was 48 and a daughter when he was 50

My FIL had a baby at 59 (who is now three years old) IMHO, it is way to old to have children. It is not fair to the kids. If is is a boy, and he wants to play catch with is father when he is 12 years old, his dad would be 82! I can see it now...
Go long Dad!
Wait let me get there (as he uses his walker to get to the other side of the yard) 15 minutes later... OK, Dad catch!
Celeb or not, this is CRAZY!!!!!
ETA: When his son or daughter is graduating high school he/she will have to pick out a nursing home. JUST PLAIN STRANGE.

I see this point, but my sister and I were 18 and 21 respectively when we lost our dad- he was only 55 when he passed. I know several people who have lost thier husbands in their 30's to medical conditions. One couple had 2 little girls- 5 and 3.
So just because someone is "young", doesn't mean they will be around either.
But I have to agree with Kelly about the *ick* factor
