Formula Fed newborns....
is it possible for my 6 week old to actually want 5oz?? We just gave him a bottle and he SUCKED it down like it was nothing.....& he has been a little cranky after each feeding but we were chalking it up to him not realizing he's full yet....
ETA: he eats every 3 hours, never longer then that.

Re: Formula Fed newborns....
sounds like a growth spurt. this usually happens around 6 weeks. it should pass in a couple of days.

no give the 5oz. let him eat as much as he needs. especially during a growth spurt. remember u cant overfeed a newborn. he'll stop eating when hes full.

Re: Formula Fed newborns....
My DD is 6 weeks old (BF & FF) - when I give her a bottle of formula she can handle 5 -6 oz like it's nothing! Sounds like a growth spurt as PP mentioned :)

Re: Formula Fed newborns....
DD started drinking 6 oz. at around 6-7 weeks. She could have done it sooner, but I didn't realize that the crankiness was hunger.
If he drinks it, keep giving it to him. When he doesn't want anymore, he'll stop.

Re: Formula Fed newborns....
My ped told me today to keep upping the amount by a 1/2 ounce as long as he finishes the bottle. She said that he will stop eating when he is full, but he is growing and he needs the formula. My DS has taken as much as 4.5 ounces at 4 weeks old.

You're not a moron! This mommy stuff is hard and we don't get a manual! Definitely give him as much as he will eat. Newborns don't stuff themselves, he will stop when he is full

Re: Formula Fed newborns....
I always put a little extra in the bottle. I would rather throw a little out, than have her finish a bottle and still be hungry.

I guess I felt like he was getting enough b/c he becomes content like 10 minutes after the whining,so I'm like OK he knows he's full now & then would spit up like 3x over the hour period of him digesting it.
I wish I could find a calendar of sorts that says how much they should be eating each week of there life.
Someone needs to write a manual! I'm going to try 5 at his night feeding....maybe he'll even give me a little more sleep (wishful thinking)

Don't feel bad, DH and I are going through the same thing! It's so frustrating trying to guess how much he needs. I wish there was a standard, but every kid is different. We figure we aren't hurting him as long as he is gaining weight, so if we are playing around with the amount he gets, we will eventually find the sweet spot, right.

Re: Formula Fed newborns....
DS is 2 months and is taking around 4 oz every 2.5 -3 hrs..(closer to 2.5hrs during the day) and he sucks it down. he's on alimentum so its a thin formula. Ive been adding rice to some of his bottles per the ped advice.
If your DS didnt want it, he wouldnt eat it. There are times DS puts his tongue out and pushes the bottle away..thats how i know he wont want anymore.
the worst that can happen is your DS will spit up if he eats too much.

Re: Formula Fed newborns....
I agree-the worst that can happen when they over eat is that they spit up. When dd was a new born, she took 4 oz almost immediately. DS is 5 weeks and is just hitting that mark-but definitely give more if it seems that he wants it.

Re: Formula Fed newborns....
Dev-Haley drinks 4 oz when we do formula and shes not even 2 weeks old yet. When I bf, sometimes if I find shes still hungry I top her off with a bottle and she usually drinks 2 oz.

I agree. I judged if it was time to increase the formula if he was sucking every bottle dry. He may take less after the growth spurt passes or he may be ready for more.

Similac had a chart that I literally kept on myfridge for months. It says about how many bottles and ox they should get at each week. DD was always on the higher end of the suggested amount per feeding but always within the amount of oxs per day. I found it SO helpful. It was about the size of like a 5x7 index card. Ill check and see if it is still on the fridge..lol.
FYI DD was drinking 6 ounces by like 8 weeks and never took more than that in a bottle. She is 11 months and down to three bottles a day and still only takes 6 ounces.

Re: Formula Fed newborns....
DD started 6 oz at around 7 weeks, but she is 17 weeks now and still on 6, so it evens out.
