There is soy based formula. Isomil is Similac version. Not sure of the name of Enfamil's version-i know there's one.

Is there a reason you would do soy first? Most PED's would start with Milk based formula then go to soy if there's an issue for baby.

Im just worried about mild products. DH and I really dont drink milk but we drink Soy milk. I just thought that Soy would be the healthier choice. But may it isnt for babies though. Chat Icon

Hey it won't hurt to ask the PED if you could try the SOY first if you feel it's better.

I think the only difference is the base of the formula, milk or soy, i am pretty sure the vitamins are the same.

Re: Formula Feeding MOms...

First, let me say, there is nothing wrong with soy. I was fed soy milk as a baby b/c I had probs with dairy for my first 6 months..

However......from reading about formulas obsessively before I had DS, everything states that there is NO reason for a healthy baby to be on soy unless they cannot tolerate the milk based formulas. The milk based formulas provide all the nutrients and are considered "healthiest" for babies.

I would definitely start with a milk based formula first, and like i said, should any probs arise, switch to soy after your pediatricians advice. Whatever works, works!

Re: Formula Feeding MOms...

But is giving Soy a bad thing? I mean my DS was on regular formula milk for 10 months and then he got his first stomach virus and was throwing up the milk and he had a bad case of Diarrhea. So the doctor told me to give him Soy milk so as not to irritate his stomach more. Well it turns out he likes soy milk better than formula. So when he was feeling better I asked the doctor if I can just continue on Soy because he seems to like it and the doctor said that's fine because in another month he'll be 1 and he'll be going on regular cow's milk. My only fear now is that once he goes on regular cow's milk after being on Soy milk that his stomach may not react well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

Anways we are using Similac Isomil Advanced Soy Milk with Iron.

Re: Formula Feeding MOms...

Giving soy to a baby isn't BAD, but babies really do need the lactose in milk to help their brains develop. Soy based formulas do not have them. Lactose is a sugar that is apparently very hard to recreate in any other form. They do make organic milk-based formulas if you would like a non-hormone, non-antibiotic milk based formula.
