That's disgusting. People spent on money on those. That is just stealing, as the girl in the article said!
I completely agree. They should not be able to get away with it. They already have the money!
This is what DH was saying when Linen and Things decided not to honor GC's but then turned around and started to honor them after the states got involved. Fortunoffs has the money already what is the problem. It is their loss if they are denying the GC's. They could have gotten rid of alot of merchandise but now they are getting in trouble with the State Attorney.

Re: Fortunoff refuses to honor gift cards
This is what I don't get, I was in there last week and a couple was registering for their wedding. How can they do this to people knowing what is going on? I felt like walking up to them and saying "Don't do it"

I only did it to get in on the promotion they were offering ($50.00 GC and the chance to win prizes, etc.). I wasn't "serious" about registering and Amber and I had fun "dream shopping". I used the $50.00 GC that night to get John an Showtime oven and we won a vacuum

Re: Fortunoff refuses to honor gift cards
I think it is horrible that they do that without some sort of warning as in - as of such and such a date we will no longer accept GCs. But having said that - they have been having problems for a while now and unfortunately the problem with GCs in general is that companies can refuse to accept them when they declare bankruptcy - it has happened many times with multiple companies while I don't agree with it - it teaches you to use it or lose it with them.

Re: Fortunoff refuses to honor gift cards
That sucks!
I don't have one, but to just kinda pull the rug from under people is wrong!
I'm so sick of all these businesses pulling crap like that! I realize using a GC, the recommendation is always to use before you lose, but w/out no announcement is wrong!

Re: Fortunoff refuses to honor gift cards
This is VERY wrong!
There is actually consumer groups looking into the GC issues not just bankrupcies.
Like why is it legal to have an expiration date? Afterall, they did declare a revenue on goods not sold. Pure profit! Then say you only have such and such time to redeem it. I know some consumer groups are looking into legal actions/laws.
I had no idea Fortune Off was having problems. A PUBLIC notice should be required to inform customers of their actions.
Too easy to just say... Oh well!

Re: Fortunoff refuses to honor gift cards
What kind of public notice would reach everyone that has a gift card? There was an article in Newsday on 2/5 that they went chapter 11. Federal law gives them permission to stop honoring gift cards at that point.
I am not saying it doesn't suck to get stuck with them but what they are doing is not illegal. I do wonder if you hang onto the card, if you can claim a portion of it when they reorganize and start paying their creditors in the future. I know my company lost a ton when Kmart declared bankruptcy but we did recover some of those losses (pennies on the $$) over the years.
