Foster children

Does anyone know if foster children know when they will be reunited with their parents or relocated for whatever reason?

Long story short: A foster child lived down the block from us for 9+ weeks. My son became friends with him and he spent a lot of time at our house and playing with our son. He even wrote my son a note asking to be best friends. (He’s definitely not my son’s best friend but they got along well).

Today, my son goes to play at the house with the foster child and his foster family (the family has a child in my son’s grade). He learns the foster child is no longer with the family. My son is completely unfazed by the child’s abrupt departure, but I just find it sad that the foster child didn’t even get to say goodbye to his new friends. My heart goes out to the poor kid who I know has been in foster care in the past as well.

I don't know if they know in advance when going back to their families or to a new foster home.

But, I'm glad your son was his friend. I'm sure it's hard to find friends when in a foster situation.

Foster children

My parents did foster care all throughout my childhood, but with babies. We never knew when they were leaving and were rarely ever told in advance. Sometimes they would just show up and remove the child. Heartbreaking but comes with the territory with foster care. The same happened with receiving a child, they would sometimes just show up with a newborn.

I always wondered what the reasoning moving a child from 1 foster home to another would be besides cases of abuse.

Sometimes I think it gets too be too much for the foster family. The foster mom already has 3 kids and took in 3 foster children. Two were young toddlers and the other was an older elementary school child. Her actual children are in grades 3-5. It’s been almost 10 weeks and while the elementary school child was fine in our house, I know there was some inappropriate talk at her house so she told us to monitor conversations. The child obviously did not have a lot of good role models or experiences so I hope the short time he was in her care, he had some positive influences.

In our case, since the babies were all mostly newborn, it was because they were either adopted or the mom decided against adoption after a few weeks. Occasionally, it was because the mom was not clean or not fit and then a family member would decide to take the baby.

There could be multiple reasons. Often time the kids are placed on an emergency basis and then family will come forward. Sometimes the foster parents do not realize how much work it will be to care for the children because often times they have behavioral issues and other things. Sometimes they need to be placed in an RTC. And yes, sadly there are situations where the children are, unfortunately mistreated by the foster parents. It’s very sad that many foster parents don’t do this just because they are good people some do it just for the money.
