Found 2 fleas on my dog.. with a question!

Not sure what to do.

If it were me, I would give him a flea bath immediately (like right this second) and wash all his bedding and maybe vacuum again. Odds are there are more on him.

Re: Found 2 fleas on my dog.. with a question!

You found 5 live fleas in the canister? How the heck did you spot t hem???

Yes, they can be alive on the dog, even with Frontline having been applied. It takes some time for them to die. Either way, are you using the Frontline that also sterilizes them? I believe only Frontline plus does that...but I COULD be wrong.

Where do you think you vacuumed that picked up the fleas? Your dog's bed, or somewhere else he sleeps alot?

The Frontline should work and prevent a true infestation.

I would check with a vet. Depends on his age, etc. Flea baths are pretty much useless and can be dangerous. Plus can you even combine them with Frontline? In addition, if you are pregnant, which it appears to be from your avatar, I would be concerned to handle a flea bath anyway. I vote no for a flea bath...just not that helpful in the scheme of things.

I would and always just get a flea comb and mix a clear container of water and dawn to made suds, and comb through the dog's fur. Then you quickly drop the flea comb into the water and swish it around, and the fleas drown and drop to the bottom of the container.

Thanks. I am staying away from the flea bath anyhow. He is pretty sensitive to most baths so I really would rather stay away from that.. Plus I am being cautious being pregnant and all.

I will do that tonight with the flea comb.

Unfortunately the dog sleeps in my bed (i cant not let him lol). I already washed everything I could in hot water and vacuumed like crazy...as for finding the fleas in the vacuum canister.. that is my crazy husband. He was sitting there outside with the canister literally inspecting it. I have vacuumed twice a day for 3 days now so im sure the canister had nothing in it but those 5 fleas! I have no idea how he spotted them.

ETA the canister is clear maybe he say them jumping around?? but they are small so i still have no idea. hes weird

But are you using Frontline Plus? If so, the fleas will die and def can't reproduce. So it will all die out, kwim?

UGH this just gives me bad memories all over again. I had a major flea situation a few years ago.

Fleas can live in a dormant status for up to 2 years. The vibrations of sound can actually bring them back to live. they are some tough lil parasites!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

make sure your dog has some flea med's so they wont be able to survive from his blood.

fleas can and will bite humans too... but they either dont like our blood or they just cant live off it. whatver the reason they prefer the animal. some humans are allergic to flea bites and will notice them like mosquito bites.. usually around the foot and ancle areas. other humans aren't allergic at all and wouldn't notice the bites unless looking for them.

if you want to know if you have fleas in your home.... lay a white sheet down... for about 24 hours or so. look for little black specs on the sheet. the black specs are feces of the flea. you could even find a flea on there.

i think some people put a candle and a bowl out too. they are attracted to the heat. i didn't do this so i dont know too many details about it. i just read about it.

also try Sevin.... i just posted about it on another thread. but it's a flour like substance that they sell in gardening. it's safe for in your house. just sprinkle down... leave for a few hours (i chose to leave overnight) and then vaccum up. it dehydrates them and kills them. I don't think your problem is that serious yet. but just so you know!! a lot of the bombs and stuff don't even work. and i had a hard time getting an exterminator to my house for the fleas. they just wouldn't come.

I would maybe consider switching to another formula.

My vet no longer carries frontline because it's not as effective.

I just switched to Vectra and I have no complaints

Re: Found 2 fleas on my dog.. with a question!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I do use Frontline Plus on him year round and this is the first flea issue we ever had so I am confused. We also have a cat but its mainly outdoors and also on monthly flea medication.

My DH's friend used to work for Arrow and he told us to put a bowl of water with 2 alkaseltzers in it out overnight. The fleas are attracted to it, that will tell us if we have a problem or not.

I did check my dog thoroughly tonight and didnt see anything but I am sure they are not easy to see. He is not itching or anything though.

I cant even sleep I feel itchy (i know its all in my head now - i hate bugs)
