Found a parakeet

While walking my dog this afternoon DH and I found a lost parakeet. I was able to pick him up and carry him back home. He was a bit scared but seems to be doing well tonight. I amd going to take him to our avian vet this week to get checked out. I figure I will post a few flyers in the neighborhood to see if anyone is missing their pet...I have a cockatiel but have never had a parakeet before...any special needs I should be aware of?

Re: Found a parakeet

It is yellow? This craigslist post mentions a yellow parakeet lost in Levittown and the child is heartbroken.

It is yellow but it is highly unlikely it is the same bird. I live on City Island in the Bronx. I will take a look at the craislist post.

The person who posted the ad replied to my Craigslist post about the bird and it is not the same bird.
I feel bad for the kid. The worst part is it was the only response I recieved. I took the little girl to the vet this morning and they estimate she is only about 6 months old. She appears healthy but a little under weight. I get the results of her lab tests tomorrow.

Re: Found a parakeet

I'm assuming the wings aren't clipped? If so, they can usually only fly a couple of feet at a time. If not clipped and they escape, they tend to stay close to the home they came from, and have been known to sometimes return and fly back inside if the the door or window they came out of is left open. Chances are, it came from somewhere close to where it was found.

You are very sweet and kind.

As guyinblue said...were there any homes nearby you could ask if they lost a bird?

Re: Found a parakeet

The bird's wings were not clipped when I found her. I found her in a park area next to the water. I did ask around but no one has heard of a missing bird. I also checked all of the local stores that usually have postings or flyers. I live in a pretty small community and it seems that with missing pets and such some one always seems to know or have heard of what is going on...there are houses on the other side of the water and there is a huge park (Pelham bay park) very close to where I found her. I will keep trying to find her owner but in the mean time I will give her a good home. I posted a listing on Craigslist and a missing bird website. I have also checked for others posts about a missing bird. I have a cockatiel (and recently lost his brother at 18 years old) so I know how upset I would be if my bird got out and did not know if he was safe.
