I don't get the purpose of this blanket and nowhere does it seem to give an explanation.  
ETA: Despite me "not getting it", I ordered one for my SIL who is expecting!

I get the impression it is to be used as a barrier, to prevent the spread of germs to a newborn. It doesn't really say, but that is my guess.

I think it is for guests to safely hold the baby. There is a mention that it was created by a paramedic and they use something similar.
