Freezing Breastmilk

As if I dont have enough headaches I am pumping every 2-3 hours since I can't breastfeed and I am storing my milk.

Since I have a low milk supply I have never pumped and excess amount of milk and had to freeze it.

I have the Medela bags but they aren't airtight or anything so how long can you freeze in those for?

Anyone know of the top of their head how long frozen breastmilk is good for? I have a fantasy that my daughter will be able to tolerate breastmilk again someday. Maybe when she's 5 I'll send it in her lunch. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Freezing Breastmilk

I think in a regular freezer it's good for 3-4 months... in a deep freezer, about 8 months

Re: Freezing Breastmilk

I think you can store it for like 6 months. I have those bags too, and I think I read that they store for that long in them.

eta: I had to go check my instructions and that is what it says.

Re: Freezing Breastmilk

Get the Gerber bags...those Medela bags ****. Gerber are much easier to use and you can stack them.

A regular freezer I go by 6 months. Just make sure to keep it in the cold part and not on the door. Chat Icon

Since we have a chest freezer as well, I keep mine for 12 months. Chat Icon

Re: Freezing Breastmilk

I honestly don't know why to use Medela bags or Gerber for that matter, none of them are actually sterile once you open them up to put the milk in. I used Ziploc freezer bags and double bagged and my 16 month old is alive and well!! In a deep freezer I have read up to a year (bc it is colder and not opened frequently, we have one in the garage and that is what I used) - in a regular freezer 3 months. Good luck!
