french drain to finish wet basement
anyone ever done this? we have a pretty high water table in my area. my basement is dry most of the year, but those spring rainstorms took weeks to drain out of the basement (we have sump pump) and the neighbors said that happens every 5 years or so.
i heard rumors:
* that people spend 7k to install the french drain and they still get water.
* that installing the french drain means digging out the perimeter of the foundation and effectively destroying the lawn/flower beds, which then need to be redone.
can anyone tell me about their experiences with fixing a wet basement? we'd really like to finish ours.

Re: french drain to finish wet basement
We did, but we had to do an interior french drain which essentially meant having to paritially unfinish our finished basement and then refinish it. It was a big and very messy job. We also had to put in a sump pump. It cost us $10k but we haven't had one issue with water (knock wood) since we did this.

ok, i see. so there's an interior or an exterior french drain. that clears up some of what i was confused about.

the better one is an exterior one- our house had an interior one but we still had moisture problems - we dug up all aroiund our foundation and installed an exterior french drain- we also put a sealant paint on the exterior foundation walls to prevent seepage
but that still does not prevent seepage up from the floor of the basement - ie there is no perfect fix
