from cnn.com - What John Kerry meant to say

It was supposed to be a slam against the president.

From cnn.com

A Kerry aide said that the prepared statement, which had been designed to criticize Bush, "was mangled in delivery."

Kerry was supposed to say, "I can't overstress the importance of a great education. Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq."

could be a little damage control or an honest explanation - who knows?

He should have just said what he meant in the first place - and he should apologize.

Re: from cnn.com - What John Kerry meant to say

I think it is still too subtle an attack on Goerge W. to not be misconstrued by the public.

I agree with what was stated in the other thread about the backdoor draft, but the comment was in poor taste.

Re: from cnn.com - What John Kerry meant to say

i think his clarification is even worse

look at all those that go to the naval academy and West Point?

They have to have 1500+ on their SATs, then graduate, to even serve!

To me his comment is a slap in the face to anyone that enlists.

Serving in the war has NOTHING to do with intelligence, grades or IQs.

Hes really screwing his chances. Not like that bothers me, but hes a real jerk for saying such a thing

I heard that too. The way I see it, it's pretty pathetic for anyone to bash President Bush in such a childish way. Oh ok, he meant to call the prez dumb. Ok, good one. As if we've never heard that joke before. Chat Icon

Re: from cnn.com - What John Kerry meant to say

As if Bush NEVER makes mistakes huh? Please!! John Kerry was brave enough to serve this country unlike that idiot in the White House. people need to listen to ALL the facts before making their judgments.

John Kerry is a smart, educated and PATROTIC man and he would never say what he said if it wasnt an accident.

And... did you hear Bush's response??
"Theyre plenty smart" "Theyre plenty talented" (meaningt he soldiers etc).
Get a grammar book Georgie Boy!! Thats not how we speak here in America.

What JK was saying, that if we dont wake up and SEE what is going on w/ this administartion, then we will continue to get into messes like the one we are in now!!!

1. It was a huge insult to our Armed Forces (just say your sorry to the troops, and most deployed soliders aren't listening to Imus, not like most care what Kerry said anyway)
2. I never knew making jokes about Iraq were funny to make to start with, it was poor taste.
3. Oh so you meant to make fun of the Commander in Chief instead but messed up the joke your basically still insulting the troops.

He is so pompous.

My 17 month old if told he hurts someones feelings can say "I'm sorry" why is it so hard for Kerry if its just a mistake.

No you dont get it... he is NOT making fun of the troops. HE WAS IN THE ARMED FORCES HIMSELF!!!! And hes not making fun of GWB per se (he seems too mature to do that). He is saying that not being eduacated and knowing HOW to handle certain things gets you into wars etc. He was making the point the GWB got us into a war and now we are all paying for it. so why didn't he say that? IMO, this interpretation bares no likeness to what he actually did say

where did you get this interpretation from? I would like to see it...

I think it's really naive to say that he wasn't making fun of GWB. Of course he was! Come on.... if the idea was to be mature the issue wouldn't have been discussed by making reference to GWB's intelligence or education. Politicians on both sides make comments like this all the time. I'm sure someone with more time than me could come up with a billion examples of things that KErry said to "make fun" of bush in the pres. election too. Of course, that worksboth ways and you could likely find things Bush said to make fun of him too. IT's just part of the political game unfortunately.

Everyone is entitled to their (and this may be the their GWB was using too, btw) own opinions on the war, etc... But, even if it was a mangled delivery (which may or may not be true), I think it is clear that it definitely was a cut on the Pres.

He's apologized. A bit late coming but he has. It's just sad he took so long no matter what he was trying to say.
I think that's all everyone wanted!

"As a combat veteran, I want to make it clear to anyone in uniform and to their loved ones: my poorly stated joke at a rally was not about, and never intended to refer to any troop," Kerry said in a statement published on his Web site.

Kerry said he regrets that his words "were misinterpreted to wrongly imply anything negative about those in uniform, and I personally apologize to any service member, family member, or American who was offended."

Chat Icon ummmm... are you his speech writer or just a personal friend of his? How the heck can you state that you KNOW what he meant to say??? Your opinion and interpretation is just that - and seems to be far from what most others got from his statement.

Besides, he has a history of slamming the military going all the way back to his congressional testimony after the Vietnam war.
