Thoughts on John Kerry's Speech
He said,
"You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."
Thoughts?

Re: Thoughts on John Kerry's Speech
I think he's an azz for saying that! did he forget he served in the military too?
completely disrespectful to anyone risking their life for this country - AND all their families.
he needs to apologize.

I agree that it was in poor taste, but I think he was trying to get at the idea of a backdoor draft, which is a serious issue.

Re: Thoughts on John Kerry's Speech
I think it's ironic (and moronic) considering the fact that many of our men and women enter the military in order to be able to attend college. He certainly needs to apologize.
But I'm skeptical of any news like these...bashing a republican or a democrat at a time when trying to decide which "side" the country will sway to & who will hold the power...it's all BS & mud slinging.

Re: Thoughts on John Kerry's Speech
I think he has selective memory. Was it not one of his campaign tactics that he received the purple heart in Vietnam.
So if No education=miltary service, then he's the biggest dummy!

Re: Thoughts on John Kerry's Speech
It was in very poor taste and did not come off well, but I think he meant something else altogether.
Enlistment rates among the non-college bound are far higher than they are for those going to college. This is especially true in less affluent communities than they are in more affluent communities where the kids tend to go to college.
Of course, there are exceptions and people who go to college enlist as well as some middle and upper middle class, but the bulk of people who enter the military come from poor or working class families and see this as a way to get ahead.

Re: Thoughts on John Kerry's Speech
I voted for Kerry - but he needs to keep his mouth SHUT!!!
He said it was supposed to be a slam against the president - but considering he said it at a college, to college students, it certainly reads like a slam against the troops.
I think he's making it worse by refusing to apologize.

Agreed. SOmetimes Politicians just turn moronic when giving speeches - I can't believe what comes out of their mouth half the time.

Re: Thoughts on John Kerry's Speech
I think he was trying to make a joke about the president. But he's jut not good at funny so he should stay away from it.
As far as apologizing, he's already explained what he meant by it. I really don't think he meant, AT ALL, that the people in the military are somehow uneducated as he was himself in the military. So, I'm not sure how he could apologize without saying that was what he meant.
That being said - it was a STUPID, STUPID, STUPID thing to say!!!

Foot in mouth syndrome. He needs to apologize. (although I agree the draft is a serious issue, i just think this was the wrong way to go about it)
Um...anyone hear Bush's response? I kid you not: "Military people are PLENTY smart!"

Re: Thoughts on John Kerry's Speech
I think it was a stupid comment it is totally disrespectful to all of the soldiers risking their lives, and to the ones who LOST their lives......I never liked Kerry, and this compounds it, and I believe he should own up to his tasteless remark and apologize for it.

well said. i hate getting into debates with people who get so defensive and take this issue sooooo personally. it is what it is, and i think if it were different, we as a country would be better off!

I was thinking that too - but if he said he "apologizes for offending anyone" people will say he wasn't really apologizing - kind of like "I'm sorry you felt that way" KWIM? Kind of a lose-lose situation now really.
BTW - I love your sons costume! My neice loves the Backyardigans - DH and I do too

Do you think any of them write their own speeches? they BOTH need to fire their speech writers
