FT Working Moms, Kindergarten, and childcare - what is your plan?
I just registered Jake for Kindergarten last week
If your DC is starting Kindergarten in the fall and they have full day - what are you doing about child care? What are your current working hours and are you changing them at all?
What time will they be off to school in the morning? What time does their day end?
If there is a thread about this already - please point me!

I registered Ava (cried like a baby and the office staff actually had to give me a tissue LOL) and I believe all the districts offer some sort of before and aftercare programs. I would call the office and ask. As far as I know, no one had to change their hours but I'm sure each district is different.
I can't believe Jake is going to kindergarten - where did our babies go????

I know!! Seriously! Where has the time gone! My district does have a program but it's by lottery... and the odds don't seem too good (I was told approx 40 slots for all of k thru 6, some of which are already filled from waitlisters)... if you don't win the lottery you go on the wait list which I hear is 1 - 1.5 years before you get a call...
Need a backup plan

Re: FT Working Moms, Kindergarten, and childcare - what is your plan?
I am on mat leave now, but only for the last few weeks, Noah started in half day "nursery" at a local school in September, and we went down the childminder route, maybe you would calll it in home daycare. So our Childminder is a woman with her own kids who lives locally, and she is registered with a national organisation called "Ofsted" they inspect her, they rate her, and they allow her to look after a certain amount of kids in her home on a daily basis.
So she picks Noah up from school at 11.45, gives him lunch, takes another little boy TO school, does the school run again at 3.30pm and he stays there with the other kids until about 5.30, its great, he is in someones home, he is safe, she takes him out to playgroups, the supermarket, to the park etc, and he really loves her!
Is something like this an option on LI??

Just wanted to add that my district has a lottery for the before and after care program too. HOWEVER, I do not know of one person that wanted in and did not get in. They always take more than the number they say. I think they love to scare people.

Sarah's registered for Sept too.
Do you have a neighbor you are close to you can ask to watch him in between school ending and you getting home? Our district is only half day, last year one little girl on the block went home with a neighbor every day and played over there until her parents got home from work. It was a SAHM who has older kids and took care of the neighbor's kid since she was around and able to help out.

I still have a few years, but my district is half day K. I plan on sending DS to the Kindergarten Enrichment program at our daycare if K is still half day in 3 years. Where do you live? I know some nursery schools in LI offer before and after care for kindergarten students who attend the local district.

Since our school district is only 1/2 day kindergarten, we decided to send her to Catholic School. Her bus comes at 7:04 a.m. and goes to 2:15. I then put her in aftercare 3 days a week (based on mine & DH's schedule) that's all we needed. I pick her up around 4:15. It's $15.00 per day and you only pay as you use.
We've decided to keep her in the school for kindergarten since I have to work 7:00 - 3:30 and we couldn't work out my work schedule and public school since the bus doesn't come until 8:15. It would cost us MORE money to send my DD to public school then it would to send her to private school (due to before care and after care expenses).
Things are changing at my job so we might have to put her in public school for 2nd grade but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
However, when I did look into public school, I did find that most schools had SCOPE and it's somewhat of a lottery to get in. My district did not offer before care, only after care.

My aunt and my mom have watched kids for a few hours after school for a small amount of money - do you have any neighbors you are close with?
One of the daycares I looked into for the baby, picks up kids from the local public and catholic schools for an afterschool program.

Re: FT Working Moms, Kindergarten, and childcare - what is your plan?
Is there a neigborhood SAHM who you could use for before and after school care? That is very popular where I live. It helps a SAHM earn a few bucks a week and your child will get on and off the bus with the children in the neighborhood without the logisitcs of day care transportation,

Oooh that's the best thing I've heard about this lottery business so far!!
I do have a neighbor that I am very close with and our kids get along great. I asked her and she said no for the pick up (she doesn't want to be tied down) but offered to do the morning drop off. And then she bailed on me for that too last week. The whole thing kind of made me uneasy about asking anyone else.
School is down the block from me so there is no bus - it's a bonus though because that means the person doesn't actually have to drive for p/u and drop off.
