How do you guys do it? I work full time. I would love to put DD in some type of sport out here on LI but what do you do about weekday practices. Seems like most are held before 5 pm.

Our soccer practice this year is held at 5. Which is absolutely insane to me. It's once a week. Many work to 5 (not me) so I have no idea how most of the kids are making it.
Last year soccer was at 6 and it was twice a week, and you could go to one or both.
My son has yet to go to one practice this year. It is what it is. I told the coach ahead of time. It sucks but we are sure to make it to every game.

Re: FTWM & Sports
The only sport we've encountered that practices earlier than 6:00 is hockey, which is so early my son needs to be picked up from school early to attend.
I think if you stick to soccer/softball/lacrosse you will be fine.

OK thanks everyone. We were thinking softball and/or cheer.
It's just insane to me I feel like on FB and the moms I know on LI IRL have to shuffle the kids by like 4 to practices. WTH. It's bad enough that school for our district doesn't start until 9:15....

Re: FTWM & Sports
So far, Ive just been lucky. Our earliest so far has started at 5:30 and I only work 10 minutes from home. I always say, I have NO IDEA how Id make it work if I had a commute. A lot of moms I see carpool and have other parents help out, or a grandparent or a sitter.
My son plays football now and has practice 2xs a week at 6, its hard and we just barely make it bc I have to pick him up from aftercare, get home, get him suited up, get back in the car, go pick up my DD from daycare and then haul as to practice by 6. They are mandatory practices so you HAVE to be there, unless you are deathly ill.

Re: FTWM & Sports
it's not easy. I can't get to a practice/game before 6, and 6 is with me RUSHING like a crazy person, prepping beforehand, sending their uniforms w/ them to school/daycare to change during aftercare etc.
last season hockey was at 5:30 on Thursday nights and he probably missed 1/2 of the practices b/c we just couldn't get him there
Most of the baseball/soccer/ice hockey stuff I've done so far is during the week at 6, or on the weekend.
Don't know how I'll handle as they get older and kind of 'have to' go to practice.

We do a bunch of different sports between my 2 children. Soccer practice is 5:30 on Fridays, Football is 6:30 on Wednesdays, Cheer was MWF at 6. I have found the older the children get, the later practices seem to get. Last year soccer practices were on Saturday mornings. I would say just keep looking, but you should definitely be able to find something after 5pm.

Re: FTWM & Sports
THANK YOU! I keep wondering the same thing myself. I signed my son up for soccer again this year because practices for his age group are at 5:30 on Fridays - that works for me because I'm off on Fridays, but the coach changed our team to Tuesdays at 5:15 - I can't make that! I work until 5 (most nights later) have to pick him up from aftercare, get him dressed for practice and by the time I get there it's time to end practice.
I'm confused as to how the rest of the team is ok with the time and day change....do any of them work?
Totally going off on a tangent here...but I rearranged my entire schedule with his swim, etc to accommodate the age group practice time...and then the coach arranges it to what he wants. How is that fair? So now I"m stuck changing teams or practicing with another team & just have games with our scheduled team. (That felt good...)

Re: FTWM & Sports
It's so hard. This is the first time we have DS in sports (soccer) but I know he really wants to try little league next spring and I've wanted to try him in Karate but the times were all difficult to make. Even now with soccer, practice is at 6:00 on Tuesdays. DH luckily is able to get out a little earlier and pick DS up from after care around 5:15 instead of 5:30-5:45 those days. I don't know what they are going to do in the coming weeks - last night it was pretty dark by 7:00. And after we turn the clock back, it's going to be so dark by 5:00 and there are no lights in the field. The first week another parent mentioned that and the coach was like "well, most people can't get here by 5:00 or 5:30." I know we can't.

Thank you for understanding. It means a lot!
I'm being told that in order to be in sports I need to be more flexible, car pool or find a babysitter.

The last minute changes seem to be common and I heard that sometimes it's an issue with other coaches who make decisions last minute and then then league has to decide which team gets to use the field. Also, some coaches are just better and more organized than others.

Re: FTWM & Sports
It's hard. DS is only 4 so right now we're doing soccer, which is one night at 5 and Saturday mornings. I'm a teacher, so I can usually make it, but if I have a conflict, my DH can rearrange to make it. It is frustrating though because as a working mom, organization is my life, schedules get put in my phone back in august, and then when people change stuff last minute, it is frustrating.

My sons practices are at 4:00 pm on Fridays. Granted I work until 4 but a majority of the world works until 5.
I don't think that practices should be held before 430/5 - I get it, it gets dark early but everyone should accommodate working parents.

Re: FTWM & Sports
That's one of the reasons I've been coaching for the last 7 years. My team, my schedule. I work earlier than a lot of people, but I still don't get home until about 5:15, so I can't possibly start practice until 5:30 during the week. Sunset is 5:55 tonight, and earlier each day. I just have practice on Saturdays since I know that I can't make a weekday practice (at least not during the fall season), and I know that a lot of parents can't either. Saturdays are busy, but I can't help that. We have games on Sunday, so Saturday mornings are my only option.
Spring is a little different, since sunset is later, and increasing during the season.

In our town the day and time is determined solely by field availability. This is often done at the last minute with several changes. Our coaches don't have control over the practice day and times. My DH is a coach on a few teams and this is the case in our area with every sport. With that said, my DH is not expected to be at the practices. If he were, I would think it would be entirely fair to accommodate him! He is giving up so much of his own time to coach your kid! If anyone should be accommodated it should be him.
Also, on the flip side of this - most people I know are looking for early practice times because its better for the kids! My kids have to be up at 7am. With later practices the kids end up paying the price. If you work, this unfortunately is one of the issues you will face. It is one of the reasons I haven't gone back to work yet even though my kids are in full time school. You need to plan accordingly - get a sitter that can shuffle your kids around or try to set up a car pool.

I don't really agree with this. So you are saying, accommodate the parents but these young kids should be playing late at night after a day of school and an early wake up the next morning in the dark and cold? I know it's hard. It's one of the issues that factors into my own decision not to go back to work. But, its just something that needs to be planned for - get a sitter or set up a car pool. IMO it's unrealistic and a little unfair to expect all activities to accommodate working parents.

I never understood why there can't be indoor practices once it gets chilly. I also don't consider 6 "late at night". But u do what u have to do. We don't do practices for this reason. I simply can't make it.

My DS's practice is at 6 right now And it totally sucks. It ends at 7:30, by the time we get home it's 7:45 and by the time he finishes dinner it's almost 9 And bedtime then is after 10. Yes I consider that to be late for a 5yr old and an 8 yr old Because his sister is subject to the same situation. Not to mention I have to be there with my Her in the dark and cold. Indoor soccer space is hard to come by even for our winter leagues and it costs money. There is a flip side to it all. I'm waiting for the day my DS loses interest but it only seems to be getting worse lol

To the PP - do most parents watch their 8 year olds practice? My DD is 5 and I have a 2 yo...she has gymnastics from 530-730 and we drop her off, come home eat dinner, leave ODD a plate, pick her up- she eats, is done by 8 and is in bed by 830 like every other night.

I guess that's a to each their own kind of question. Personally I am not comfortable leavinf my 8 yr old alone on a dark field with 24 kids and one trainer and no nearby bathrooms. So yes, I stay. Do all the parents? No. I think it's great that your 5 yr old has the stamina to do gymnastics for 2 hours every other night until 7:30! Mine definitely does not! And, no way I could have her sleeping an hour later! That's amazing!

I'm not sure why you're taking what I said personally. Our situations are very different.
If you read what I wrote I did tons of rearranging of my schedule to accommodate the leagues time. Not a time that benefits me & only me...the league stated practice time in which I ONLY signed up for because I made it work.
Out of the 10-12 teams in our league for this age group I'm on the only team who changed practice time.
I don't need to plan accordingly and hire a sitter or car pool. Please - take the time to read what I wrote before telling me what I should & should not do. TYVM
