FTWM - need advice on how to limit your work day

I just went back to work last Wednesday and I don't know how to approach my bosses about my work hours. I'm an attorney at a law firm and before I had DD, my hours would be from 9-7 when it wasn't busy.

My mom is currently watching DD (but I told work DD is at daycare). My mom is okay with watching her until 6:30ish, but I haven't been able to leave until 7:30ish/8 (so I get home around 8:30/9) since I came back! DH also works really late, but can pick her up Tues and Thurs.

Any advice on how to approach this with my boss? He's a workaholic and at work 24/7. I would like to see DD awake, which I haven't in the last two days Chat Icon Chat Icon

I know how you feel. I am attorney as well. What has worked for me is being in the office from 8:30/9am-4:45/5:15. Come home hang with baby for 1-2 hours, eat and then work 2-3 hours from home to finish up. It is hard because I feel like I work all the time with breaks for sleeping and hanging with baby but for right now its the schedule that works and gives me some time with DD.

Are you with a large firm? Is there any precedence for other FTWM offering alternative arrangements?

I think it depends on the climate--if it's unheard of to work anything but those hours, you could try looking for a different job. One of my friends switched to in house counsel at Geico, and the hours are very regular.

Otherwise, I agree with a PP, you could offer to take an 80% cut but really do the same work.

Thanks for the advice ladies! I went to my boss this morning and let him know that I had to leave by 5:30 in order to pick DD up from daycare. I'll just have to work from home afterwards, which is fine with me. *whew*!

Chat Icon I think this is going to be my life too, but at least I"ll get the 1-2 hours. I prefer that over 0 Chat Icon
