Work Q. ....... Need Advice
background 411: i'm the manager over the servers, my friend christine is manager over bartenders and Tom is the owner.
i hired this girl --as a server-- NOT as a bartender. she is on the bottem of the totem pole.
so, a bartender quit so christine was looking for a replacement. (which she already had, but only i knew---it wasnt publicn yet)
WELL, this new girl i hired went right over my head AND christines head and went to Tom and was all like "i can do it, i have bartending experieince"
(she has 4 months experience---- in a restaurant, NOT a bar)
anyway i am just so mad she had the balls to do that! i found out cuz tom told christine the girl is intgerested. christine was mad that she did this too.
so,,,,, what should i do? i have to speak with her soon anywya about somethihg else...... should i mention that she should come to ME before going to tom? and even then she needs to talk to christine before tom. since she does the bar hiring. also, she doeswnt have enough experience and is the last one who would move up to this.
or should i let it go since it wont be happening???

In the bar field... let it go. Trust me on this one.
And trust me when I say this wont be the last time this will ever happen to you.

Actually she didn't go the person in charge... she went to the person above the person in charge.
But you should still let it go. Its called "bar politics".

But you aren't the one thats in charge of the bar.
If anybody should say anything to her... it should be the bar manager... and the bar manager should tell her to go to her for any bar inquiries.
If you want to mention something... fine. But take it from me... 13 years in the industry.... I have heard and witnessed a lot of stories. Women in general can be extremely catty about things like this. They are always trying to "one-up" the other to try to land that bartending gig.
You wouldn't want to be made out as "the bad guy".

Lets just say I know plenty of women in the past that had to do "a lot more" to get the job. If you know what I mean.

Unless you owned a bar and had a lot of pull (and push )... nowhere near either you or me unfortunately.

she said shed hire me wayyyyyyyy before this girl.
Which is exactly the reason why I said to drop it and its not worth being "the bad guy".

Re: Work Q. ....... Need Advice
Well if it is the proper chain of command that she is to come to you first...
then yes i think i would tell her...
But i don't think she meant to slight the two of you....

i guess you guys dont see that she didnt. she went over the person in charge. she went to the owner who doewnt hve anything to do with the hiring. she should have went to me first (HER BOSS!), in which i could have went to christine (bar manager). but i wouldnt have anyway because it isnt an option for her.
for example: if you want to switch fields or districts you go to your direct manager to speak with that fields manager.
anyway, DJ...... thanks.... i talked to her and didnt even mention it.
i guess if she goes over me again then i will think about telling her who to go to in the future.... but for now its already been forgotten

Re: Work Q. ....... Need Advice
People "go over" people all the time in the bar industry. This isn't a normal job setting.

Re: Work Q. ....... Need Advice
When you talk to her about whatever the other issue is, just mention that if she's has a problem/wants something in the future that she should come to you first. Tell her it makes you look bad to go over your head as if you couldn't handle the problem/need on your own. Don't make a big deal out of it, but if you don't address it, it'll keep happening.

Jess, this is actually the exact opposite of the way it happens in the corporate world. If a job opens up, you speak with the hiring manager, not your own manager. A courtesy would then be to let your manager know you are trying for this job but it's not a requirement. I know that girl Christine was the 'hiring manager' but since this girl is new, she may have thought the owner was the ultimate decision maker, not Christine.
IMO, I don't think she did anything wrong.

Re: Work Q. ....... Need Advice
Given that you are her direct boss, I can see why she wouldn't go to you about wanting the bartending position. I'm sure she didn't/doesn't want to risk her current position. I really don't think you should say anything to her about it, let Christine tell her that she already hired someone esle and stay out of it all together.

i agree.
If I were in the situatino,, I would tell my boss as a courtesy- but I would not expect him to go to the other manager and tell him I am interested. I would go to the manager (Christine) myself and tell her I was interested, and then tell you (as a courtesy) what I had done.

Re: Work Q. ....... Need Advice
too bad that you don't understand how the work force works
if you want something, you do what you need to in order to get ahead
glad it worked out though
