Funneling of cervix
Has anyone experienced this? I am 19 weeks with twins. The doctor said there is a slight funneling but the length of my cervix is still like 3 1/2. He didn't seem concerned but I am really upset.

Re: Funneling of cervix
It is when the cervix starts to open from the inside out. Personally, since you are carrying twins - I would ask your Dr. to either refer you to a Perinatalogist. I, personally, think it's something to be taken seriously. But then again, I had a bad experience so I would lean more towards aggressive treatment for cervical issues. It really concerns me since you are only around 15 weeks.

I agree...I would DEFINITELY ask to see a maternal fetal medicine specialist (perinatologist)
good luck

Re: Funneling of cervix
There is a high risk doctor in the practice and I will be seeing them on July 21st. Should I ask to see them sooner?

Re: Funneling of cervix
I see a high risk doctor and they told me my cervix was short meaning C section, possible best rest and if i need a stich. They are monitoring it but they didnt seem to concerned. They want me to go back in 2 weeks for a vaginal sono. They didnt give me a # though of what my cervix is.

I would absolutely see the high risk doc sooner. I would demand an appt next week or if they won't accomodate you, make an appt with Madonna Perinatal

Re: Funneling of cervix
I agree - shortened cervix or funneling of the cervix is nothing to ignore. Many, many babies are lost at 20-22 weeks because of shortened cervix. It's the time when the baby (babies) start to gain more weight and put pressure on your cervix - which is why it's critical to deal with it immediately.

Re: Funneling of cervix
IMO I would call Monday and demand to see the high risk Dr sooner. You are carrying twins which makes things more difficult on your body. I am carrying triplets now and only had cervix shortening at 28 weeks down to 1.2 cm so they put me on modified bedrest. I am now 33 weeks with no change and cervix is completely shut. You need to be stern with them and see that Dr. before the 20th...But thats just my opinion....

Re: Funneling of cervix
I agree with everyone else. The fact the cervix is still long means a lot, and I will be honest, a bad sono tech could detect funneling when theres not really much there, the cervix is a HARD area to get a good look at in a sono and even worse with twins....
Ask to be seen at Madonna or another high risk Dr. As soon as possible. IMO , those techs have seen it more and can really detect if there is an issue or not.

Re: Funneling of cervix
my advice is get it checked again ASAP and make sure u see a high risk doc immediately. I lost a baby at 20 weeks from this last year, from an incompetent cervix, and my cervix shorted and funneled this past pregnancy. i was on bed rest and i got a cerclage, and thats what saved my son. I dont want to scare you, but for me funneling was very serious, and the fact that you have multiples means more weight on ur cervix. 3.5 cm cervical length is good but mine went from 4.0 to 1.2 when i was 17 weeks, i can change rapidly and without warning. call first thing Monday.
