Furnishing/Decorating a Home

So as of right now we are going to be moving by the end of next month Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have no flipping clue on how to furnish/decorate it. We're moving from an apartment upstairs from the IL's so we'll be only be moving with a living room set and a bedroom set (unless we decide to get a new one). That leaves 2 bedrooms and a finished basement to furnish. We won't have the $$ right away to buy a lot of stuff. Those who have extra rooms, what do you do with them? Did you just leave them empty? We don't have kids (yet Chat Icon ).

Also, I have no idea how to decorate. I see things that I like but I'm not sure how to implement them in my home. And things I usually like don't really go together so I'm afraid I'm going to have a big mish mosh home. And reading threads about decorating for seasons/holidays just makes me more confused and anxious! I'm afraid all of my money is going to go to Home Goods or Pier One! Chat Icon

Re: Furnishing/Decorating a Home

awww! i was in the same exact position last november, and still am... to an extent! we moved with basement-quality living room furniture, and my parents old (but beautiful) bedroom set. we bought a kitchen island, better LR furniture, and took my grandparents dining room set out of storage. for our office, we were using an old kitchen table up until this week when we finally got a desk. upstairs 2 bedrooms (our br is on first floor), we inherited a twin bed and nightstand along the way, and our old queen bed is in the other room along with my parents old dresser from the 80s.

painters just arrived to paint those two rooms, one of which will be the nursery. but they were previously unpainted. dh just put a new floor down upstairs over the course of the past month... up until now it was carpet from prev owners, now it's laminate (and looks sooooo much better).

the only room with ANYTHING hanging on the walls is the dining room. all of the rooms still have "builders fixtures" lighting.

anyway my long drawn out point it, it will take time. it will frustrate you, but IMO, don't rush it. you will know when you find something that is just right for a certain room. and when you find big pieces you like (for example, our living room coffee table was the first thing purchased for that room), you will build everything else around it.

we still have paper blinds and no curtains. now THAT is REALLY getting on my nerves!

hope some of this rambling helps!

eta: our finished basement has an odd assortment of mismatched bookcases, chairs and tables, and our old couch. it is what it is for now.

We have two empty bedrooms upstairs that I think will probably stay empty for a while. Once we have kids, they will be used as a nursery and then their bedrooms. I don't want to spend money on furniture just to fill them for the time being with temporary stuff.

I'm right there with you!!! I don't know what to do. I am currently struggling to find window coverings (ugh).

Our house was in pretty good shape when we moved in, and all we painted so far was the family room and dining room. The family before us had a boy and a girl, so one bedroom is purple and one room is blue. We left it as is. The purple room has become a guest room with our old bedroom furniture and the blue room has a desk.

We searched high and low for furniture. There's so much stuff! I didn't know what styles to go for. My style has been 100% Ikea thus far lol. What we ended up doing was browsing all different stores (mainly online and on Rte 110) for the different styles. We came to like Thomasville the most and bought a new bedroom set and dining room set from there. We have yet to furnish our formal living room. We saw a set at Raymour that we liked but...I couldn't do it. So our formal living room remains empty.

It's alot but like the pp said, just take your time. You'll feel rushed but there's really no rush. I'm finding that as we live in the house, we are noticing the things we need and things we want to do. I have to keep a pen and pad handy to jot everything down so I don't forget!

Lots of luck!

Do the rooms you need to first. The ones you will be spending most of your time in. Look for inspiration, find a pillow you like and work off that. All the colors in my house come from a hat box my mil gave me. I took it to lowes and had the paint made to match. Go walk through some store, homegoods, macys home etc and see what cathces your eye.

We had the house renovated before we moved in. Bc of that we had less $$ for furniture, so our home was sort of empty.

We bought ds his furniture first . We had a love seat in the family room and the sofa in the livingroom just to have a place to sit.

We have a cheapy ikea table and chairs in the kitchen

We still need a dining room set, a family room set ( we did buy a livingroom set) . We recently bought our bedroom furniture. We are slowly getting furniture but have not decorated yet. We have paper blinds on most of our windows. My lr and dr have nothing on the windows.

We have been here almost 9 months

Re: Furnishing/Decorating a Home

I am soo glad I'm not the only one in this boat! Luckily the house is move in ready and the only thing we'll be doing is painting, ripping up the carpet and putting new floors in the master bedroom and painting 2 walls in the kitchen because they're pink Chat Icon
