IMHO, a drop down rail is a NECESSITY..I got my furniture from JC penny and it is great quality and not that expensive. I am not sure how much you are looking to spend...good luck

They have beautiful cribs at JC Pennys and Babies R Us. I got mine from Buy Buy Baby and used the 20% coupon - it saved us alot of $$$. This is my 2nd crib I have purchsed and neither are drop down. I didn't want it either and never had any problems lifting my son out. It is all a matter of preference. You get what makes you happy.

I 100% agree about the rail. DH and I were looking at furniture without it and it wasn't until I was in Bellini (where we ordered from) that the saleslady told us why it's so important. As the baby grows, the mattress will have to be dropped down (first for when he sits up and then when he can stand). With a drop down rail, it will be easier to get him in and out of the crib versus lifting him over a stationary rail. For someone with back problems (me!), I can't imagine doing that so many times. We've seen great furniture deals at Behr's and BRU, as well at JC Penney. Good luck!

Wow, I never would have thought of that. I assumed they all had them for some reason. I need to save my back too, ANY way I can.

Re: Furniture dilemma, not sure what yo do... (sorry it's long)
Same thing happened to me... I saw the furniture I wanted, and it was discontinued!
I've found 3 sets I do like, but trying to find them for less. I'm sure there is a distributor that has them!!!
One of the cribs has a small drop down part, not the entire drop down side though. Perhaps this will send me back to the drawing board as well.
I have seen nice inexpensive stuff on Sears and JC Penny.

I didn't get one with a drop down rail - I just love how it looks converted into a bed.
I would try JCP like the other girls mentioned. Have you gone to Behrs? I know they are a bit more expensive - but they have a big selection - maybe you can find what you like there and see if you can get it somewhere else cheaper (or something similar)

Re: Furniture dilemma, not sure what yo do... (sorry it's long)
I dont know if this helps but we bought a dresser and a bookcase at Gothic Furniture. We got a crib that matches the finish of the furniture. Its furniture that we can keep for years to come.
In my opinion only, the crib is temporary. It goes away and the rest of the furniture stays. I know alot of cribs become headboards later on but I liked this dresser from Gothic so we got it. My sister happened to give me her old crib but that was after we decided to go this route with the furniture.
We looked at all the "baby furniture" places and just felt we got very nice, sturdy, solid wood furniture that the baby can have til he is a teen if we choose to keep it. It was all readily available too, 4 weeks delivery time.
The crib she gave me has a drop down rail. I have a problem bending over the crib if the rail doesnt drop down and the mattress is low. It hits a spot near my ribs where I had a surgery so the drop rail works for me. And the fact that the crib was free didnt hurt either!

One thing i can say is this: I woudl die without my drop down rail. Unless you are very tall, you need one, believe me!

I had a convertible crib with a drop down rail and I actually didnt think much of it until I started to use it and I am very glad that I have it. I think I am average height (5'4) and DS is 10 months and we just dropped the mattress completely down and taking him out of the crib is so much easier with the rail lowered.
