FYI - Cord Blood Banking/Payment and Cost
I saw the thread the other day on whether or not people were interested in banking their baby's cord blood. A lot of people mentioned cost as a deterrent in doing it. I had just received a bunch of literature from my OB on Viacord and CBR for cord blood banking and I thought you may be interested to know that both of them have "gift registries". You can set up an online registry and family and friends can contribute money towards your baby's cord blood banking. It's a way to offset the initial cost. Anyway, just wanted to pass the info along!!

Re: FYI - Cord Blood Banking/Payment and Cost
thanks... yes I know that they have registries for it, but I did one of those for our honeymoon and still had to pay the bulk of it. We only got about $500 for our $3000 honeymoon so I can't chance it. If I only get a hundred dollars towards it then we are still responsible for the rest and we have no extra income at this time. We are actually looking into the donation banks right now, I'll feel a lot better taking from there if we have given to it and its FREE.

I hear what you're saying. I didn't realize they had such a thing for the cord blood so I thought it was interesting. My husband and I are leaning towards doing it either way but I thought having the registry may help even just a little for us. But I totally understand the expense so I understand where you are coming from!!

Re: FYI - Cord Blood Banking/Payment and Cost
We're planning on donating the cord blood. We're using a private bank that will collect it for free and pass it on to the national public bank.
If we had a history of leukemia or other hereditary diseases that could be treated with cord blood, then we would have opted to bank privately and pay the fees. DH and I based our decision on the AAP, which encourages public cord blood banking as well. It's a personal choice...
Who we're using (Cryobanks International)- http://www.cryo-intl.com/options/
