DOS AND DON'TS OF DISCIPLINE

Tricia O'Brien from American Baby magazine dicusses the dos and donts of parenting. Among her tips:

1) Do explain the how-tos
-teach your child to act appropriately
-instruct your child... don't punish them.

2) Don't give a lecture
-in six words or less tell your child what you want them to do
-state... don't negotiate rules.

3) Do look below the surface
-when your child screams/throws a toy -find out what's really bothering them
-expressing empathy helps avoid power struggles.

4) Don't cave when she cries
-don't back down from punishment when you're trying to teach
-let the child know what you expect of them.
