Sunflower, I have read a lot of woman wait til after birth to either purchase or rent pump... to make sure it working out for you. They cost about $250 or rental is about $50 a month.
I knew I wanted to bf but did not reg for a pump, was not sure I would be commited for a long period.
Is this your first child?

I agree, I would not register for a pump. Many stores will not take back a pump, even if it is unopened.

We rented one in the beginning for $25 a week, and once I knew it was going to work out - ordered a pump.

Also - you can get a pump much cheaper online than at BRU or BBB.

Re: Gals that plan to breastfeed -

If all goes well, I will get the Medela PIS Advanced or the Ameda pump, but I plan on renting first before I make the investment

Re: Gals that plan to breastfeed -

Great tip, I never would have thought to wait thanks ladies!!

This is baby #1 for us so waiting and making sure BF'ing is working out is a smart idea.

Re: Gals that plan to breastfeed -

I needed my pump the first night home from the hospital, when my milk came in. I got so engorged, I needed to pump. I would have been screwed without it. So I say rent or buy but do not go without.

Re: Gals that plan to breastfeed -

you can rent right from hospital b4 you leave. Medical supply stores also offer rental... sometimes cheaper.
I agree with being ENGORGED..have your baby empty you or have pump handy.

Re: Gals that plan to breastfeed -

I am currently using the PIS. I registered for the PISA, however, my mom bought the wrong one by accident. I never really looked at it and started using it and it works fine.

Re: Gals that plan to breastfeed -

I will be registering for the expensive one. My BF went through 2 or 3 finally got the expensive one (about $250 I think) and said it was so worth it.

Newbie question, but why are you renting the electric pumps?

I saw some manual pumps for about $40 - are they that bad?

honestly, I would NOT register for a pump. What if you cannot breastfeed for some reason? Pumps are not returnable once opened. I would wait until the baby is born and maybe rent a pump from the hospital JMO Chat Icon

Re: Gals that plan to breastfeed -

I plan to rent first and if all goes well, I will buy, but I really haven't researched pumps to know which one I would want when that time comes.

to the original poster - i agree with everyone who says to wait and see if it works out before buying a very expensive pump. renting from the hospital is a great idea.

if you don't rent from the hospital but want a pump handy right from the beginning, it's not a bad idea imo to also buy an inexpensive manual pump. i have the medela harmony (in addition to the PISA), which i use if i don't want to transport the whole big contraption. like, if i go out for a few hours and leave DS with a bottle, i'll bring the hand pump in my bag to relieve engorgement. also, now that he is older and only nursing very briefly at night, i use the hand pump to express what's left over and store it.

to the quoted poster - if you are planning on pumping regularly, the electric pumps are MUCH better at getting the milk out than the manuals. you get much more milk in much less time.

A manual pump is used for pumping one breast at a time so it would take twice as long. I actually prefered the manual pump at times. In the beginning when I was engorged DD would empty one breast and I would use the manual pump to empty the other. You can go at your on pace and sometimes if you're really fast you can get the milk out faster with the manual.

Re: Gals that plan to breastfeed -

since we are on the subject, how much milk do you guys express daily?
I rent the Medela pump monthly, it also have the manual pump so I can still pump after I re-turn the electric pump.
